Retain salary and/or take (bad) cap hits back in return.

Or suck it up and buy him out to make Torts happy.

Either way the Flyers will just compound the mistake of signing Hayes in the first place.

or maybe a GM with balls tells the coach to make it work or at least try.

Here's why:

If I'm a team that needs C depth, I'd rather go chasing after Monahan, Brassard, Bjugstad, Eller or Bonino than get stuck w/ Hayes for 3 more seasons. Even Max Domi if I had to.

- Tomahawk
Other than taking on 50% of salary what's the cost? A fourth or fifth?

dont get the Hayes hate myself. He is exactly as advertised. He is very easily moveable at 50% retention imo.

Buying Hayes out is stupidity. Or trading him with retention for that matter.

For what? To sign the next Hayes contract on a team that refuses to face facts, and rebuild?

You're incorrect that I'm strictly looking at it from offense. I'm looking at the entire position. I clearly posted in the post you replied to that I think he has a higher ceiling as a winger than at center. It's not a greater add if he's scoring in the 30 to low 40's as a 3C then he would be as having potential to be a top 6 winger with better point totals playing in better offensive situations with more talented players while keeping the same strong play away from the puck. By all means, let's pigeon hole a young player as a future 3C. Rather than try and develop him into something more.
- MJL

TK Farabee Tippett, potentially Cutter/ Atkinson, Hayes or Laughton, who exactly is he beating out for a top 6 winger role? His ceiling is higher at center, a third line (fringe second) line center that can check a line is a very good player. Your fantasy top 6 winger isn’t realistic

Yea, I'll believe one of these teams being willing to take on 3 more years of Hayes when I see it.

You're speculating and not looking at facts. You also don't know who will be traded. Is Atkinson going to be able to come back and play effectively? Will his injury degrade him as a player? Lots of unknown. He has a higher upside as a winger in my opinion. Keeping him at center will limit his development as a player. Will Cutter play wing or center?

Was just looking at Capfriendly and wow.
Looking at the Flyers top 10 cap hits (and a Sanheim kicks in next year on an even more outrageous number) and it jumps out immediately: who on that list is worth their cap hit? And yes injuries count because there is a risk/reward when signing or trading for older players. Massive failures and yet Fletcher is still here.

Well, McJesus called the Flyers ‘pesky’ in his postgame presser.

It might be one of the cases where you hate the contract, not the player.

Hayes has his warts but he is by far one of the least issues with the team.

Hilarious. I don’t see him as having a higher ceiling at wing than TK Tippet or Farabee, that’s a fact. There’s a huge question mark of him beating out a number of guys for that last spot. You are the one who is speculating this fantasy top 6 winger idea

The hypocrisy of MJL is at its finest in this post here, he deals in facts but then tell me I don’t know who will be traded but I’m the one who brought up the current players on roster and in the pipeline. But the facts you know!

I need to educate you on what a fact is. Your first statement is an opinion, not a fact. Also the conversation is about what is the best position for Cates. Not about if he has a higher upside that those players. You seem confused. I am speculating about his upside. That's what potential is all about. Speculating. LOL. We have a sample of what he can do playing on the wing. Hayes should be playing center and Cates should be at LW on a line with Frost and Tippett.

The sample we have at center shows that he is weaker offensively. Despite playing in top offensive situations and with top offensive players on the team such as Konecny.

And he’s the only plus player of the centers, he’s top 3 on the team and the group of other centers is way down the bottom

The LVK just unloaded Weber's contract. Let's see Fletcher do the same with Ellis.

Any accepting team would probably get Hayes at 50% AND some picks from the Flyers. Like Ottawa getting rid of Zaitsev.

After an abysmal first half and getting accustomed to the new position. And he’s a rookie as you love to point out for others. So scoring is not this issue

Weber has 3 years remaining on his deal after this year. His total salary for those 3 years in 3M. Ellis has 4 years remaining on his deal and the total salary for those years is 24M. Trading Weber and Ellis is not the same thing.
