The future for Smith is to replace Dumoulin. Not sure how much we gain by playing him on the right side.

It's very possible we resign Dumoulin this offseason. It will be at a much lower rate. I realize I just contradicted myself, but I have no idea what direction this team is going.

I do know this team needs to get younger and Smith needs to part of the equation.

I think this is totally possible....unfortunately.

Its crazy that right before Tanger missed a lot of time Sully seemed to realize that Dumo should not be on first pair with him...he split them up and both player's stats improved....Tanger comes back and he puts them back together. Now in saying that he had Dumo put wiith Rutta...and well, no Rutta for a while now.

I concur, I definitely see smith replacing dumo next year, just thinking if they trade petry, Smith on his offside worked in a limited sample.

I don't think they are going anywhere this year even if they make the playoffs, so it would be prudent to sell off all the ufas you can, but don't think that will happen

TDL is only 8 days away...and there's 5 Pens games before then. If they drop most of these 5 I could see them selling off some pieces.

The key in between now and free agency should be cutting salary. This team is too bloated with way too many contracts and cap hits committed to clowns. You can thank Hextall for giving extra years to Kapanen and Carter. That'd be about $6M we'd have to spend on an impactful player. Move on from Dumo, see what Zucker wants in a new contract, try and dump McGinn.

All of this is moat if Hextall is still around. I think we all agree that he isnt the solution and a new GM is necessary.

I think this year is futile anyway. If he can somehow get Petry off the books and bring in Schenn as a stopgap for the rest of the year, I actually think that's a good move. I think Petry has been pretty good, but he's definitely not the player from a few years ago and he's already 36. Not going to get any better the next couple years.

It seems every offensive d man the pens get needs a season to adjust. Much rather have just kept Matheson.

Imagine the 3rd line if we didn't unnecessarily extend carter, then waste cap space on kapanen and ruuta...

Is Heinen even on hte team any more?

I really hope this is Hex last season as GM. He's been pretty awful. I hope the Pens make some moves quick to make the team interesting. I haven't followed them much this season and I am about to mail it in and focus on better weather.

I love people poopting on the Carter extension. When he was signed, he was coming off a very productive season. Hindsight is always 20/20.

I cant speak for anyone else, but the general problem people had with it was that it was a multi year extension. You're right, he had a pretty good year when he first came over from LA. So I had no problem bringing him back this year, but signing a guy his age to a multi year extension was just unnecessary.

There were legitimate options out there for the Penguins last year. A number of good UFAs that could've added a lot to this roster. That was the first time the Penguins actually had cap space to work with and Hextall wasted all of it.

False. He was in the middle of his age 37 season and anyone with a brain knew there was little to no upside in signing him to a 2 year deal.

last season was a dead cat bounce.

He was coming off 3 consecutive 30 point seasons and hasn't been fully healthy in years. a two-year deal was foolhardy at best.

Last season wasnt his first with the Pens. He came to the Pens a few weeks before the TDL 2021...had 11 points in 14 regular season games and 5 points in 6 playoff games. He looked great. Then last season he was playing, with Geno gone for exactly first half a season, mostly 2C but also 1C when Sid was out the first month. He was waaaay over used for his age and right around when Geno came back he started looking cooked...and has stayed cooked haha. Still ended up with 19 goals and 45 points last season....however, most of it came in first half of season.

He looked great with that unsustainable shooting percentage in an extremely small sample size. Sign him to a long term extension

They were saying yesterday how pissed off the core would be if Dumo was traded at the deadline.
