it's more like $1.5M after taxes, based on his age / career earnings, his portfolio is probably earning more than that per year at this point, so between that and having kids, could easily see him not wanting to deal with the grind of an NHL season anymore. Also, based on the new rules on 35+ contracts, I thought they don't count against the cap so long as they're not front loaded (which Carter's was not).

That's all I'm saying. If ever there was a guy who MAY walk away, Carter might be that player. He can't possibly need the money and he's hurting his team. He knows it. The players know it and management knows it. I wouldn't want to be that guy. Probably won't happen, but everybody involved should be prepared for him to be in street clothes every night. If I were Sullivan and Hextall, I'd make that clear.
Like you say, it does nothing for the cap hit. It just salvages the poor on ice performance.
