Because he was dirty.
Best part was Kariya coming back and scoring, although that wouldn't happen today.
Kariya would have been in concussion protocol. - Fenrir
As he should have been. The sportsnet short documentary on him was good. He explained that he has no memory of that event happening.
Listen this is not my original thought- use your google machine to sus out the arguments on both sides- probably a lot charts for you - Greschnergy#4
I want to imagine the billions of dollars lost when a hockey player gets hit in the head with 90mph shot and dies on the ice. Then tell me that the NHL will be liable for that.
These sports were not always played with helmets - think out of the jar for a change. Humans would not make themselves flying missiles - Greschnergy#4
Steve Downie would.
Also, the game was played much slower and with players whose slap shots were about as fast as today's wrist shots. The players back then averaged probably a half foot smaller and 40 lb lighter than todays players.

All I'm gonna say about the helmet issue is, Guy Lafleur didn't wear one and he was a sight to behold with those beautiful locks flowing freely as he skated down the ice.

They have their hands full already with the current CTE class actions

From the last blog:
Fair enough. Though I would argue that some of his "victims" need to do a better job of not putting themselves in that position. When he's out there your head needs to be on a swivel. There was nothing wrong with either of his hits last night but he was forced to fight for both of them. I wonder if that is just how other players are going to react to him now for everything. - JRR1285
That's fair, but he DOES cross the line with some of his hits. The ones last night were totally fine, but there HAVE been instances where he could make an adjustment but instead just nails a guy in the chin. I'm cool with catching a guy with their head down. I'm not cool with catching a guy with their head down IN the head.

As part of the stadium series the Canes and the League are creating new ball and street hockey leagues to try and reach out to kids who maybe don't have access to facilities or equipment required to play hockey.
Not sure if it's going to be a nation-wide thing yet but FINALLY a good idea. No better way to fall in love with the game than by playing it on the street.

some of the speed change is due to a lack of fear - Natural selection doesn't work that fast

How most of us started playing cause our parents didn't have the money. Funny I was just saying the other day how the NHL needs to get the kids involved if they want the sport to keep growing.

A must. Cost to engage rules out a large portion of the population. Need to find a way to grow the game at the grass roots level and make it more affordable.

a league sanctioned ball hockey or street hockey program is WAY overdue, especially in cities where ice availability is pretty limited. Great to see.

That's great. Had a blast playing street hockey when I was a kid.

I like it. Plus it's cheaper. You just need nets, a ball, a stick and gloves. Start there. Let interest grow.
