Measures your teams relative success 5v5 while ur on the ice. Panarin 5v5 has been terrible imo this year. 3v3 or on the PP he’s been great, but there’s been way to many lapses in his play at 5v5 that have been very frustrating. Kakko on the other hand is constantly back checking and working his ass off in the defensive zone, which reflects with his +9.
Panarin has 32 pts 5v5
Kakko has 22 pts 5v5
Panarin has been on the ice for 36 goals against
Kakko has been on the ice for 13 goals against. - nyrangers9479
But it's an individual statistic. And it accounts for nothing other than "were a player's feet touching ice when an event happened" It's not a team-centric measure of anything.
Panarin also averages more ES ice time per game. Don't you think that kind of increases his chances of of being on the ice for an ES goal-against? He's played almost 100 more ES minutes than Kakko this season.
And this is neither a dig at Kakko or a wholesale write-off of Panarin's short-comings. Just pointing out that a simple +/- isn't really an indicator of anything either way.

Panarin has been on the ice for 38 goals at 5 on 5. He's been on the ice for 39 goals 5 on 5 goals against. Plus minus is meaningless. It's batting average in baseball now. Nobody cares if you .338 with 11 homers and 46 RBI. When a guy can hit .240 with 45 homers and 100 RBI. No doubt who'd you'd rather want.
And we're doing this after a game where is undisputed when Panarin was really good, stupid penalty not withstanding.

Those 45 home runs win u games in the regular season, come playoff time ur the NYY of the last 10 years. Ur stats are off a bit also, I posted them on the last page.

I know I’ve heard players hate seeing a - number by their name tho. So it has to mean something to a player

I've said my piece, at this point I'm just repeating myself. But this article gives a good breakdown of why it's an outdated, irrelevant measure of anything useful and also talks about some players/GM's hating it as well

I could see a player hating it if, like you said, he just got on to the ice because someone left too early or something.
When I look at that I say ok this team is bad and look to see who has a terrible number and who has an ok serviceable number, and make a determination that way. Good teams rarely have anyone with an awful +/-.
Schenn, I used before, is +8 now…OEL is -18. Just about 2 minutes more TOI. That’s enough to tell me that Schenn is holding his own and OEL isn’t

Most of your team having a terrible +/- is only an indicator that your team sucks
I don't agree on the last part but I am out of energy for this debate
