I think for a center over a PPG that it's probably pretty reasonable at age 27. - Aaron_85

He's yet to play a game for the Isle so... wouldn't depend on how he performs over the term of the contact? |

Not much risk involved to find out.
You want to land a player like that you typically have to insanley overpay on the open market or shell out a boatload of top flight assets. Lou did pretty good for what comparables have gone for in the past and locked him up long term at a fairly competitive rate. |

Lou gets to be the big news in NY sports for six minutes until the Nets trade Kyrie. - Canada Cup
From Sportsnet:
Lou Lamoriello doesn't like disclosing the details of his contracts, but he apparently has no issue divulging how he feels about them.
While speaking to reporters after signing centre Bo Horvat to an eight-year extension, the New York Islanders general manager declined to share any specifics about the contract before stating bluntly: "All I can tell ya is it's too long and it's too much money."
"I mean, you want the truth? Next question," he added, while chuckling. |

Career years have historically paid players slightly above what they may have gotten. However, he's aged 27, PPG in career year on a terrible canucks team, 2nd line center. I think it's pretty fair. It likely won't be considered great value or underpaid but with hopefully the cap jumping within the next 36 months, it'll be right where guys sign.
The best part of the deal we can agree on is he isn't walking to UFA and signing with the bruins.

I don’t think the question is whether the number is right. Once Lou traded for him he had to sign him. To me the bigger question is one of fit and why you’d bring him in to begin with.
NYI is basically Barzall, a few good D and a goalie. Beyond that they have a core of guys making good coin who are in their 30’s and locked in for a while. What does Horvat bring that group? I don’t see them getting far this year and Lee, Pageau and gang aren’t going to get betting in the next few years and Horvat is just eating up a big chunk of space and trade assets that could have been used to rebuild.
I think Lou was feeling the heat and needed a home run or the owners wanted a splash to get bums in the seats of their new building in the short run. |

Right they are aging. Horvat fits into a younger crowd in his prime for the team. It isn't a terrible deal.

But the problem is that there’s not really a winning core there for him to fit into to actually accomplish anything. There’s Barzal, a good goalie and a few defencemen. If you were adding him to the Bruins or the Leafs, it would make sense. Maybe there are some great youngsters on the Isles that I don’t know about but it seems like the most significant impact of his signing is that it limits their ability to do what needs to be done. He’s not a game changer for that team as far as I can see. |

They don't play flash high octane regular season hockey. However they have shown they can play tight playoff hockey, quite well in fact. I doubt the Islanders would be the Bruins first choice for a round 1 matchup if they could choose. We'll see how it plays out.
What's a "winning core"? The Islanders have been in two conference finals in the past four years. |

They have a lot of guys signed and some free agents or guys with 1 year remaining to make moves in the off season if need be.

They’ve got $33M locked up on guys in their 30’s for anywhere from 2-5 years (one of them comes off after next year). They all have NTCs
Hardly any money is freed up in this off season. Varlamov makes $5, Mayfield makes just under $1.5 and there are a few around the league minimum.
They’re just kind of stuck in the middle. Instead of building, Lou used a pick, a prospect and a guy he could have traded for more picks and/or prospects for basically a 2C who won’t take them very far and ties up $. |
