If the Capitals were a stock I’d be shorting it after this announcement. Soft as putty guy getting five for five is wild. - ObeseOprah
That's a lot of $ for a guy worth a 4th round pick. |

They have 9 players signed and $63m committed, and only 1 defenseman. How is that going to work going forward?
The team is ancient. Strome is their youngest forward at 25. |

When did Stan become their GM? - rpeters01
Couldn't have been Stan. Early indications no NTC or NMC included.
But good for him signing for the big bucks.

And Carlson coming off LTIR is their only signed defenseman for next year, although they have control over two younger D who will be RFA's.
They probably have to unload Mantha and Tom Wilson (7 team no trade list next year). There's 11 million. If Hawks fortunate enough to land Bedard, Wilson would be a good addition here. |

Wow! So the Hawks let him walk and he signs a 5X$5M contract. Crazy! But good for him. - Angotti
I’m curious now that he’s not having to prove himself will he play to the same level that allowed him to get that contract? As you say, good for him, I’m just happy he got it playing for another team. |

And it cost them zero draft capital to sign him to a one year deal as a try out. Good for the kid, his best years are still in front of him |

So 50 pointish forwards who cannot play defense are now worth $5 mil? Think ADB is going to take less than $10 mil.?
How much would Kane be willing to sign for for s chance to win a cup if he is traded without an extension?

100%...my thought on this. Just wait until year 2 or year 3 when he's fat and happy and complacent and that fan base is losing their minds. |

He is making $5,166 mil the rest of this year and next. Then UFA. If the Caps move him it will probably be to a contender that will overpay. One thing about Wilson.... With his style of play he has missed about 30% of the games since the beginning of the 2018/19 season. His body might wear out earlier than most. |

I'm waiting for the Caps to announce a new deal for Erik Gustafsson at the same numbers as Strome got. Then you know they have lost their minds.
I'd look for Lars Eller to move on replaced by Strome and who knows how long Nik Backstrom can play with his new hips. That team is heading for where the Hawks live right now. |

No idea there...so many variables...he could do a team a solid and sign for less but would NHLPA want him to discount and not help maintain higher salaries for guys like him Ovechkin, Malkin, Crosby as they age out...so next waive like McKinnon, Maker, and McDavid can get a benchmark?
Too many wheels here in motion.
i think IF Kane were to extend or sign on somewhere that's it. I can't see him bouncing around with his young family. Where on the flip side I could 100% see Toews chasing cups until he's done.
Still think there's a decent chance Kane ends up back here this summer after being traded to help guide the next wave of kids, and chase team records.....and could easily see Davidson getting him a legit player to be paired with to help sell tickets, and hit the cap floor. |

Good points. Lots here on this board concerned about the team making the cap floor next year. Taking on a big contract for a serviceable player is one way. I wouldn't pay much for him in a trade, possibly future considerations if Washington gets really desparate. He'll be out of the conference if traded to a Western team. Let's say Hawks somehow land him. If healthy then they can flip him next TDL to a contender.

Holy merde, Dylan Strome extended by the Caps 5 x $5M
https://twitter.com/Kevin...tatus/1621539774795317248 - MartiniMan
Probably about right for a decent 25 year old slow 2nd line center.
0.7 pts per game
A minus 7 on a good team.
14 of his 36 points are with Ovechkin on the PP.
He will be 31 at the end of the contract.
A little gamble by Strome and a little gamble by the Caps.
My prediction is that he is traded before the end of this contract.

...with Strome getting the primary assists on OV's record tying and breaking goals.
So are the Caps going all in this year before entering cap hell?
It's been mentioned they are light on signed defenseman next year. Would they need a certain veteran LD (2M retained) for the stretch run and the next two years?
Do they need a RW to play alongside a former linemate center and OVI?

I don’t think KD is going to retain on Mc Cabe no matter what the return. He doesn’t have to move him,

I think KD is going to shock the hockey world at the TDL and become a buyer. KD is finally turning heel and going full SB!

He's got 11 goals, 36 points in 52 games if you call that proving himself. 14pts on the powerplay he's getting big opportunities. |

If Kane and Toews don't waive, KD realizes he won't be getting certain assets, high picks and/or prospects, back for them at the TDL. He still has to rebuild the farm system. He then may trade McCabe to help acquire said assets. I doubt if he gets a 1st as some pundits predict even with retention. If KD is satisfied with an offer, McCabe will be gone. Moving McCabe will also open up a LD spot next year for the myriad of defensemen listed here yesterday.

Between that and the aging roster, definitely a short here.
Everyone saw the same movie last year, as evidenced by the Hawks not being bowled over by any offers at that deadline. Are there really no centers available this summer, for them to make this deal? |

Good point, I guess Washington’s requirements of a player to prove himself are low? Be interesting to see if he can play well enough to keep the fan base happy and to avoid a buyout. |

That's not what i said, they got him for nothing, but you're right 50 point NHL players are worth nothing and grow on trees for the NHL |

Has there ever been a player bought out before their contract began? I mean besides our "fantasy board" buying out S. Jones before his $9.5 began. |
