Im ok with him moving the 1st rounder this year. Be nice to win.
- Byfuglien Ate Me

Well, I always value first rounders no matter the picking order. But our window is this year and next with the Core.

And I feel there's no way they would/ should move Knies without ever seeing his play in the lineup.

So it's the first for me too.

Gotta wonder if we're leafing this Horvat trade. A decent 1st rounder in one of the better drafts in a while, a good prospect and a piece they can/may flip for more picks.
That's about what I'd expect for a rental.

For reference - Raty is ranked (by Wheeler on the Athletic) about 50 spots higher than Niemela.

I assume Big Lou will give him 8 x 8 any minute now.

Its pretty cheap for a top 2 center. If not a top line center.
- Aaron_85

It is, but if you're the New York Islanders, who are basically front-lined by (with the exceptions of Barzal, Dobson and Romanov) a pretty aged core.

Nelson is 31, Lee is 32, Bailey is 33, Parise is 38 - depth and secondary guys like Czikas and Palmieri are 31. The core of that team is past its prime and in decline. Sorokin is in the prime of his athletic career - and playing like it - at 27. He's keeping them afloat - they have a positive GF%, but they are 10th worst in xGF%.

Bottom line, to me, is that they shouldn't be giving up assets and picks for players based on their team composition. If they manage to resign Horvat, he'll be among the next assets they sell off in the next two years, and I think Horvat and his agent are likely aware of that - so why would he sign there? If they pay him enough to entice him to stay, his contract will be very difficult to move.

It feels like a swing for the fences by a GM on the way out with little to lose and no time to hang around for a rebuild (which at Lou's age is probably very likely).

Yeah, doesn’t really work with the punch line that the whole country is looking for work since the unemployment rate is so low. I’d go with something like ripping away all our freedoms or something vague like that.

Meh take one last stab at it before you rebuild.

the 1st is the only valuable piece in this deal.

Bottom line is its a meh deal for both sides. Isles had a couple good runs and might as well go for one more, they signed those contracts to win.

Dumbass asleep at the wheel again.

Horvat didn't play for the Soo otherwise he would have been on that steal of a deal.

Man, if the leafs wanted horvat they could have done this deal. This is like Engvall, protected first, Hirvonen. I think everyone here thought it would be way more expensive.

As fans we suck at rating what it costs in trades

- Aaron_85

Gotta disagree. This is 1st, Niemela and something like a Kerfoot (if he had another yr).

Isles first is much better than the Leafs first. Raty > Niemela (according to wheeler's very recent rankings). They could flip Beauvilier this year or next for some modest picks. They should re-build around Pete and Hughes and maybe this is a sign of some direction. Maybe ...

Sammy was def one of them. 617 pts. 13-3, 8828 pts total.

You're undervaluing Raty pretty significantly. Those are both pieces the Islanders could use more than a bunch of guys older than 33 in the next years.

Beuvilliler is a cap dump, he has negative value.

Kerfoot could get a Jarnkrok 2022 TDL return right now.

I am not, he is a B prospect.

They have a better chance to win now then they will in the next 5-7 years. Spend a little to go for it.

Those picks aren't guaranteed either.

Meanwhile in Kanata, Pierre Dorion stirs from a restless sleep and remembers when he was the star of the off-season.

Get Mike Grier on the phone and and call our press guys. Karlsson is coming home!

FWIW, NYI fans are saying they should have taken sharp instruments away from Lou just so he wouldn’t make any last stabs.

What exactly do you think the Islanders are going for? Maybe if they add Meier and a couple more pieces but as it stands they are an almost make the playoff or blown out by Bruins team.

Horvat just smells like a LLams type. I bet he doubles down and overpays him immediately.

Not a homerun for the Nucks but I think this is a pretty good deal for them. Extra picks in 23' are big value (rumour is most teams are telling sellers they won't part with a 23' ...only 24' picks).
