Any of them have a 10m dollar player on them?
- Fakepartofme

No.

but it does not matter, why didnt the other 20 teams or so that didn't have a 10M player win the cup? Its the key apparently.

Yes, but that's not what we were talkin' about Shacksy. My point is that given how good he is and contractual situation he'll be signed by the Sharks or traded to a team that wants (and can afford to pay the contract and the compensation) to lock him up.

Meier will probably do a Tkachuk ...angle a new home via a trade and sign an extension with that new team for a number like 8 x 9.5. That's my guess.

Again....mercenary tactics. Pick your place and wiggle for every dollar. Screw the team who drafted, nurtured you and paid you handsomely. Johnny Gudreau is a good example of that. Before his contract year, he played like sh!t. He has a great contract year and pulls the ripcord for a soft landing in a city with no pressure or will to win. Congratulations on your retirement package Johnny Jockstrap!

I heard an interesting idea. Pat Kane to the Sabres. He might not want to bounce around to a bunch of teams and could agree to a trade back home for a mini push but more of a longer term deal (whatever longer term is for him)

I don't think you even know the point you are trying to make
- Santo_44

The point that I'm trying to make, is this team can't win a playoff round but the players want to be paid, like they were the Colorado Avalanche after winning the Cup. The GM is timid, looks at analytics all day. He fiddles with 3rd and 4th liners, keeps an anchor on his roster with Wayne Simmonds and the team says; sorry, no can do, cap restraints. So what are we to expect of this? We're the Ottawa Senators of the early 21st century. Built for the regular seasons, a bust in the playoffs. Fix the damned chemistry!

Chemistry. I also saw many decent players leave Boston for bigger money. Where are they now?
- PrinceLH

So let those chemicals build with this core like they did with the B's. 34, 16 and 88 are not an impediment to winning a Cup.

Needed them to grow, needed a better bottom 6 and some better 'tending. It hasn't worked ...doesn't mean it won't. Look at the Avs.

We'll add a piece or two and throw TB over the rails this year. Boston said the team they feared the most - Leafs. Trotz said the Leafs are right there.

It can happen.

Fingers crossed.

OK Leaf Buds. It was a great discussion, this afternoon. Great points of view, no name calling, friendly banter, question and answer. Too bad our politicians couldn't learn from such debate. Time to rustle up some grub, flip on the Center Ice Package and enjoy a great original six matchup. Reminds me of the lineups of those days past.

Rangers: Jean Ratelle, Rod Gilbert, Vick Hadfield, Brad Park, Carol Vadnais and Eddie Giacomin.

Leafs: Darryl Sittler, Lanny McDonald, Errol Thompson, Borje Salming, Ian Turnbull and Mike Palmateer.

The players aren't, the contracts are the impediments. If 34 gets 14+M Marner 12+ and Nylander 10+, there's a problem here Mission Control.

This. Plus look at the fact Boston’s core is aging as is Tampas. Leafs core pretty much coming into their own and prime here. Our window is far more open. I think really we just need to ride things out more. The dissapointment tends to lead to more knee jerk reactions.

Expecting a forward move but not one of the big flashy names

The short answer is that they have about 1.9M in real (not pro-rated) contract space. They are carrying 23 bodies so that could go higher if they dropped a body or two (eg. Simmonds).

They can make a modest add or two if they wanted without deletion. If they need room to add a guy making 5+ then it probably means a guy like Kerfoot goes the other way.

Can I ask your opinion further into this?

Here's my take on the LTIR situation:

Cap is $82.5m
We have $7.2m currently in LTIR that does not apply against the roster costs.

Now let's take our base 12F and 7D and 2G, without Simmonds, Knies, Anderson, Benn - and you have a roster cost of $78.7m (including the $212k in bonus money).

Now you add in the most expensive guys to bring your roster size to 23 - Simmonds and Knies (assume he gets a $925k ELC), and that brings your roster cost up to $80.7m.

Available LTIR space is the LTIR space you have - (cap ceiling - actual cap used), or $7.2m - ($82.5m - $80.7m), or basically $5.4m in LTIR space available.

Is that your understanding? Because it seems that there's more money available if Muzzin is out (which all indications are that he will be) that just the ability to drop under the cap ceiling . . .

I guess I'm wondering if I'm missing something in that consideration.

Coming into their prime but also towards the end of their contracts. IMO, showing a commitment to going for the Cup might be helpful in convincing the big boys to stay. I’ve been very conservative over the past few years but I’m moving into the go big camp now. Riley Nash ain’t gonna cut it.

Fair enough there. Agree on the Riley Nash part. I mean Id not balk at ROR or a top name but…. Id rather not blow assets for short term too. A year or so….

No what you have heard is talking heads looking for relevency, something to speculate and talk about, looking for clicks. No actual facts either way.
