One of the best player in the league for entering the zone with the puck and creating something.

He's not perfect (he barely scores himself) but he's someone that makes players around him much better.

- Scabeh

So Marner is way better than him because he can do that and score goals right?

Whoever plays with him these days.

Does he even have stable linemates? I feel like the Islanders just throw names in a hat and pick their lines.

And if any of them worked, they’d stay together

Cleary overall JT is on a higher level than Barzal in terms of career. Who'd you draft if they were in the same year. JT all day and twice on pizza day.

Oh I was not aware that Barzal had been a playoff monster let me check the stats.....

Barzal has 6 more goals in 10 more playoff games and one less assist in the same # of assists.

So no, not just in regular season.

I'm giving the Islanders full credit for what they've accomplished in back-to-back seasons a few years ago.

But it does seem like they've gone as far as they could with that group.

So, technically, I'm right.

Barzal is faster...that's aboot it.
- AdamFrench

Objectively, he is faster, a better and more crafty skater, and a better puckhandler. He's also a smoother passer - but not necessarily with the same vision that players like JT have. He's Marner-lite. He doesn't have a league average shot, but is an above average passer, who can skate the puck out of trouble and into the opposition's zone well.

I think Barzal is an excellent player - but next year he's up to $9.2m. I'd rather have Marner for an extra $1.7m. Marner's next contract may make be balk at these comments, but he's definitely worth more than Barzal.

As for JT, he is a better worker, wins puck battles, scores goals, has an excellent shot with an excellent release, is an above average passer and has excellent offensive vision.

For the Islanders, you keep JT at, say, $11m, or you keep Barzal @ $7m (at the time), knowing that you've got a lot of guys who can win board battles already, and other guys who can pot the puck in the net if Barzal gets them the puck. Barzal was younger with more long-term upside, but JT was still the better player in the near-term - I get the decision.

He's also overrated and grossly overpaid.

At 7M, I like him.

At 9.150 next season, I like him less.

Sure if him playing more playoff games is your measuring stick you are.

I get it, your a Habs fan so you need to move those goalposts to feel better. As a Leaf fan been there and done that like back when a 'moral victory' was Colton Orr beating the brakes off the current DOPS.

Even I kinda enjoy that clip these days.

The Habs finally doing a rebuild the right way has been great so far. Sucks that Slaf and Caufield are injured and can't finish the year but it's not like the results this season matters anyway.

Barzal would rank 5th behind JT this year on the leafs. So you're point?
- Aaron_85

Are you going to back that up?? Can’t make those kind of claims without backing it up.

Right??

As long as they can play come the start of next year without any negative repercussions from injury that may be a blessing in disguise in the Bottom out for Bedard sweepstakes.

Too bad Florida started playing better.

The way the bottom 5 teams in the league are playing, I doubt the Habs will be bad enough to "catch down to them".
