Would be nice for the team to actually play well for once. Outside of the Vegas game, they've been dogpoop all month. This 9 day break after tomorrow should hopefully let the team reset.

The team is somehow 8-2-2 this month despite being 25th in CF% and 26th in xGF%. Players and coaches keep saying how their play isnt where they want it to be and they need to be better, and yet nothing has changed all month. Still plenty of time to turn it around, but its definitely a bit concerning if this is how they're gonna play going into the playoffs. Gonna be a quick 4 and done in round 1 if things dont actually change. Ironically, the play started to drop with Marino out of the lineup, so hopefully the combination of getting him back and the break will help stabilize the blueline and the team.

Agree on the Marino aspect. It seemed like once he went down we have had a lot more trouble with our break outs as well as defending against the odd-man rushes. Hopefully he comes back healthy and ready to go after the break.

Okay not the worst. Moneypuck has Blackwood with the 4th worst rebounds above expected this season since he returned from injury in December. Opposition rebound opportunities are up 60% in games where Blackwood plays compared to games Vitek is in net. It's not all on him obviously, but it certainly doesn't help leaving 50/50 pucks in prime scoring chances.

LeBrun posted an article where he interviewed Fitzy. Not much we didn't already know though. He wants a top 6 winger with team control beyond this season. And LeBrun saying Fitz is trying to get Bratt to "buy in" and wants him signed inbetween Nico and Jack's number.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous about Bratt not wanting to sign long-term. I could see this being our own Tkachuk-situation if he's not signed by the draft.

Friedman with another hit on the Devils on his pod this morning. Nothing new but maintained how highly the Devils think of Meier and that they're legit in on him. He said Fitz hasnt had gotten a chance to talk to Meiers' camp yet about a possible extension but it likely wont matter. Fitz believes that if he can get a good player(Timo) here and he gets to play with Jack or Nico that that player will want to stay.

Also said Horvat doesnt make much sense here for the Devils.

Another thing he pointed out, when talking about the Blues. Back in the summer the Devils and Blues had some discussions about how if the Blues ended up landed Tkachuk, Tarasenko might have ended up on the Devils.

Meier could make the difference with Bratt “buying in” but if he wants a big payday and not a cup then send him off. Have a big feeling that Bratts agent is messing with his head.

The suspense is terrible. We have so many solid prospects to choose from not named Nemec or Hughes. Give ‘em all away for this guy lol. There’s no room for Casey or the Russian moving forward anyway. Meier is the player we could only dream of Holtz becoming. Schmid is just fine over Blackwood. Yada yada yada.

The turnaround isn't as big as it seems(outside of just looking at the actual standings), in the sense that this team would've been a wildcard contender with just league average goaltending last year. Heck, in the month of January right now the team has been playing worse than what they were last year lol. Goaltending and a little luck with some 'clutch' goals is why they've maintained position throughout the month.

That's why he went out and got a Palat-type of player. He and management have all of that info, they knew.

This is what I always wondered. How do teams know its going to be the season? How do players like Pasta hold out for more money because they know they are worth it then becoming a dominant star the next season? Why did Devils give Jack 8 mil when he really didnt deliver much to that point?

Is this all analytics and if the numbers trend up then its fool proof?

Yep, pretty much all analytics at that point. Fitz said over and over again that Jack and Nico will tell him when 'it's time', and their play last year sent that message. These teams have way more and in depth analytics that aren't available to the public too. The Devils analytics have been trending up for a few seasons now, and last year they were better than multiple teams in the playoffs.

It's not totally fool proof, and you definitely need some luck too, but typically you're going to be right more often than not if you just follow what story the analytics are telling.
