ej seems kind of interchangeable with luke schenn

expectations were too high and no development based on their draft positions

i’ll put this on the presidents and gms

a related topic

How many top first rounders have been rushed into the fire and failed by management misjudgment of their skill sets?

- Skalapy

Big difference here Skalapy: EJ was a 1st overall pick with Jordan Staal, Jonathan Toews, Nicholas Backstrom and Phil Kessel all picked after him. Schenn was a 5th overall pick where Stamkos, Doughty and PietrAngelo all went before him.

Agree - early to say with conviction at this point. But also rather easy to say that Brady Tkachuk>Kotkaniemi. Wright looked really good winning a gold medal for Canada.

Always good to get a discussion going by saying one of the worst picks ever but at best you can question whether he’s better than Wright or whoever. It was a really weird draft and it’s going to be a few years before we can really assess these kids.

I said in the past 30 years, here are the 1st overall picks in the last 30 years previous to the Slafkovsky pick - Now Honestly see if you completely disagree with the 5 worst that I picked. Also with the the understanding that I agree it is early on Slafkovsky, but his stats for year 1 are really poor.

No bias on this one Pat, Slafkovshy has 10 points and is -13 in 39 games with the Habs. The only highlights I've seen of him to date are him being hit really hard by opponents. Yakupov scored 24 points in 48 games in his rookie season, Daigle scored 51 points in his rookie season. Fairly clear trajectory
- winsix

Draisaitl had 2 goals, 9 points, and was a - 17 through his first 37 NHL games. Not so clear trajectory.

oh for sure, they definitely aren't always fun to watch. but they've had a lot of good games as well, and compared to last year's cluster(frank) there's a lot of positive to look at.
- Pat1993

But I thought St Louis was the saviour and had everything figured out last year. They get thumped more often than not, and as a Leaf's fan that had to endure the 1980's and most of the 2000's before Matthews was drafted I know that getting all happy winning the Habs Leafs rivalry usually means your team is a tire fire

not sure where this comes from but the new management team has been at the helm for about a year now, getting rid of the dead wood and building a winning team can't really be done in the span of only a few months.

He’s one of the worst picks if he’s much worse than other players in the draft that they didn’t take. There’s no way you can say that right now since no one has really done anything.

Agree with this and Jeff Gorton was an excellent hire IMO, he did a good job with the Rangers. That said, Leafs picked 1st overall once under Shanahan and Leafs made the playoffs during Matthew's rookie season. Habs look to be a few years away from being a playoff team. This is especially true with the improvement of the Sabres, Devils and Wings, teams that would potentially fight the Habs for playoff spots.

yeah, I have the feeling that the process could go a bit quicker than anticipated if everything goes well but I try to avoid looking too far ahead and rather focus on the current positives. right now it isn't always pretty but I feel they're heading in the right direction.

Sorry for your confusion. I said one of the worst picks in the last 30 years. Has (frank) all to do with what was picked in 2022 really. Even so, we'll see, maybe he's a candidate to be offer sheeted by the Canes. The comparison is Slafkovsky to the other 30 guys on the list.
