Yes and no.
I think the issue may be a touch more team wide. While he was hurt puck movement by the D wasn’t very common for the leafs… safely clear the zone and only move the puck if the opposition essentially gives you a wide open lane and even then the D didn’t carry it in as much as they’d dump it once they hit the blue line.
This is why I think it’s more of a team wide issue… the whole team is trying to embrace a PMD when one doesn’t really suit the simple stay at home style that works for them. I’d like to see them go back to their old style while he was hurt instead of getting him to move the puck so much. Still let him do it but get him to be conservative with his choice of when to do it. - Dozzer
That goal was a broken play. Rielly never had control of the puck. JT and Bergeron were fighting for control when Rielly stepped up. He tried to pass it across but it deflected off one of their sticks. It was an easy pass across to Timmins if it didn’t hit JT or Bergeron. It doesn’t really have anything to do with dumping it or wide open lanes. |

Coach of year candidate sucks - drexel
Could have sworn I just read something like a week ago about Keefe getting the shaft from some analyst by not even putting him in the top 10 for coach of the year. So who's got him as a candidate. 🤔
Regardless, people can make the odd poor decision and still be good at what they do, it's not a perfect or bust thing unless your 12 or just trolling for a response. |

Coach is factoring into it as well, because you have to know going in that pairing Rielly with Timmins is an awful idea, no? I mean, did we forget the Sandin experiment in that spot?
Why put a youngster who's been playing so well like Timmins in that spot with a consistent rover who tends to hang his partner out to dry in the process. - joel878
I get the idea but I’m not sure he’s ready, Timmins that is.
I see that guy being an effective stay at home guy who’s got that skill to provide a decent number of assists, is still primarily defensive however.
To bank on him in a top tier role at this point in his career may be a tad early lol.
That being said I can also see the reasoning is simply not to break up the other two pairs since once Brodie is good to go it’s Timmins coming out, not Holl or Liljegren. |

Rielly is an expensive d man now so he should be an equivalent to a popular Pink Floyd album when it comes to defending his zone |

I have missed a bunch of periods this year, so I'll take your word for it, but sounds plausible. |

I see Timmins kind of the other way. Offensively he's got it but defensively he has room to go, which is totally where I'd expect someone with 50 NHL games to be. Not so different than Sandin prior to the steps he's taken this year.
For me if you're shooting for the safest pairings with Brodie out of the lineup, it's Rielly/Liljegren, Gio/Timmins, and Sandin/Holl, and you're not exactly featuring one pairing. Not much room for playing with pieces beyond that. |

I no longer live in Canada. Stuck in the US of A paying their "fair and balanced" taxes and streaming Leafs games since the weird black out/poopNHL Network stuff blocks out the 7 other services I pay for, which is why I asked the Anaheim guy.
But thanks Drex. |

Nope you can’t just mix everyone up, that and Sandin and Holl were together earlier this season and they were an ugly pairing and I certainly don’t miss them.
If anything just bump Rielly down to the third pairing with Timmins and let Gio/Holl and Sandin/Liljegren be the effective top 4 they’ve proven they’re capable of being.
I like tonight’s pairs, but I’d have Rielly/Timmins playing the defensively easier minutes.
And Engvall!!!! |

I don't want Rielly and Timmins on the ice together in any scenario. Because Rielly is a massive defensive liability and Timmins is not built to bail him out.
Because you can't have 1/3 of your pairings be a complete defensive black hole, it's too easy for the opposing coach to cherry pick that pairing, especially on home ice.
They've already been chewed up on the first goal, Murray had to make a huge glove save to bail them out early... And well basically that goal right there proves my point. |
