Anyone who thinks Nylander will be traded is insane. The Leafs (and Dubas) are all in this year, and Willie is having a monster year. There is no conceivable trade imaginable that would include Nylander. - Whipper
Willy asked Kyle for a promise during his last contract that he would not be traded.
Dubas kept his word.
Now it will soon be Willy's turn to remember that when his next contract gets renewed. |

I predict Matthews will break out of his playoff shell. Expect him to be a PM Monster for as short or long as they are in the post season.
I won’t go as far as predicting the first round, which is arguably the best couple weeks of hockey. - Woderwick

Chychrun's injury woes should concern the Leafs enough to not want to give up a king's ransom for him. - mjones242
Sandin has missed 5 months in 4 separate injuries in the last 2 years...but yeah who cares about that right? irrelevant for him but relevant for Chychrun |

I'm thinking Knies should be left alone for the season. No sense in rushing him at this point unless we're completely desperate.
One also wonders if his numbers are elevated on a very, very talented Golden Gophers offence. To wit: is he a real boy or are his numbers nicely propped up by Cooley and Snuggerud?
Haven't watched him play a lot but making the leap from the NCAA to play limited mins on an elite NHL team in the middle of a playoff race doesn't seem prudent at this juncture. (insert Dana Carvey)
Then again, maybe he injects exactly what this team needs? 🤷 - mjones242
Will be given every chance to do what Greenway and Krieder did for their teams coming in late season from the MCAA and for a playoff run. No reason to believe that Knies can't perform like they did. |

Okay so if I give you Sandin might have injury problems similar to Chychrun it becomes a wash.
Let's check other things: Sandin is 2 years younger. Makes 33% of Chychrun for one year less but is RFA at the end.
I take my chances with Sandin here. Slightly younger, some upside to him developing more and costs less. Along with not having to fork over equivalent of 3 first round picks.

Except historically that isn't likely to happen so yes reason to believe it won't happen. Absolutely.
I am not saying you can't hope or give him a try but to say "yeah absolutely there's no downside to this" is factually incorrect.

in 3 years when we need to re sign AM and Willy and JT is still on the books for 11M for one more year I'd rather have Chychrun at 4.6M than Sandin as an RFA...if he has a chance at being as good as Chychrun he is in for a big pay day. |

I don’t know what they do. I heard the head scout from the Kings rave about the kid, saying he’d never seen anybody better in any college viewing and that he was ready to step into the Leafs lineup and that he’d look good on JT’s line.
But the problem is that there’s no real room from the end of the Frozen Four till playoffs. I think there’s 3 games before the playoffs start.
Maybe they sign him, let him play those games and don’t start him right away in the playoffs. There’s no limit on roster size. He can practice with the team, get the experience and see what.
Like I said, I don’t know how high they are on him. Maybe they think he’s as good as a bunch of guys currently on the team or some of the possible trades out there. They’ve been watching him pretty closely.
He’s a big boy, over 6 ft and 210. - Canada Cup

I think they make the trade for that player and it allows Jarnkrok to help be a shut down with Kampf or slide him up if need be. I think if he continues his strong play for a few more weeks it means Dubas won't feel he has to give up too much for a guy he wants. - Aaron_85
I agree with this, tough/nasty LW for line 2 that can pester, annoy the opposition a la Bunting and score and keep up with JT and MM would push J-ROC to the 3rd line.
This would give them such a solid shut down line that has a dash of scoring threat & perhaps would make Engvall or Kerfoot expendable in a trade (and that's not even counting Robertson coming back which if 6 weeks is 2 weeks before the TDL.
The 4th line has lots of options between ZAR, Holmberg, Hunt, Wayne Train (although I'm not sure I want to see him come playoffs but maybe?), Joey Anderson & other Marlies.

irrelevant, we are talking leaf adds. Will cost to add anyone and everything that holds value to the leafs, whether its Sandin, a 1st or a 7th. |

Sandin is RFA with arb rights. He's playing behind Gio and Reilly. He won't be rewarded some massive contract if they went there. Again, I take Sandin in this case.

Yes, Sandin is obviously a concern but Chychrun would be an even bigger concern.
Why? Because you'd be bringing him in to play a much larger role at a much higher cap hit and giving up tremendous assets to do so.
If you're trading for Chychrun you better know wtf you're getting into. |

Abruzzese for one. - Aaron_85
Abruzzese is not Knies. A nice prospect but he is not near the level of him...Abruzzese is a late 10-15 in the prospect rankings. Knies is a top prospect.
There are plenty of examples of GMs trusting NCAA players to come in and play well out of their last season. Not every one had the luxury of a playoff run like Greenway and Kreider.
Mcavoy came in and played 6 games top mins for the Bruins.
Hughes came in for 5 games at the end of the season and had 3 points but Nucks missed playoffs.
Caufield another NCA player who came in for a playoff run and did well, we witnessed it.
Jaden Schwartz, Blues missed playoffs.
This is just after a quick glance. |
