He was given CPR and defibrillated on the field. His heart had stopped. I can’t remember the term but if you get a blow to the chest in a certain spot this can happen. The biggest question is how quickly they were able to restart his heart.

He’s been stabilized and most likely had his temperature lowered in the hospital to protect his brain. It might be a day or two before they know for sure the full nature of his recovery.

Hard to see how they get this game done

From my somewhat-educated knowledge on the subject, the biggest question is when they started CPR, ensuring his brain was fed oxygen. As long as that is occurring, starting his heart isn’t critical in the first few moments.

I once performed CPR on a guy for 11-12 minutes until the paramedics arrived, and they were able to revive him (this was before AED machines were everywhere).

Great, blame CC.

Yeah, that’s the term I heard. It’s actually more likely to happen in baseball or hockey where a ball or puck will strike the chest. Wedgie is right that the key is getting CPR started as quickly as possible and then restarting the heart. Obviously we have no idea about how that went down but his teammates sure looked like they thought he was in very bad shape or possibly dead. The TV docs I heard said it will be a while before they know what shape he’s in (possible brain damage being the biggest worry)

With any heart stoppage the key is always getting cpr started asap to keep that blood flow going to vital organs.
All the best to him

Heres a doc talking more about Commotio cordis and the likelihood that this may or may not have occured.

Do any of you guys know a spot along the shore of Lake Ontario in the GTA that has two wooden benches and a chessboard on a stand between the benches, overlooking the water?

Pretty hard to see what they were doing and when but you’d have to think they had the personnel to get to figure out what was going on and get started quickly. The other players were sure freaked out though

About 20 different ways I could tell this…

Took CPR training in high school. Never used it. Never recertified.

Flash forward about 16-17 years. My wife is pregnant with our first. CPR/First Aid training offered at work. I figure it’s a good thing to have, with the baby on the way.

A couple of years later, I’m at a fundraiser hockey thingy at Ricoh. I play my game, shower, dress, eat my pizza and use my two beer tickets.

My brother is my ride, so we are walking out. Some guy I have never seen before or since says, “hey, you want my two beer tickets? I can’t use them.”

So here’s where it gets really funny. My brother is getting married in two franking days. As this is all occurring, his bride-to-be is sitting in a bar in midtown with my parents, and my sister and brother-in-law, who have just flown in from London. We are already late. But free beer, right?

We each have one more beer.

We are walking out again when I realize all the water bottles I supplied for this charity thingy are still on the benches. I ask the organizer if he can grab them. He says that the last game is almost over - why don’t you just grab them?

So I go down to the benches, start grabbing water bottles, when someone cries, “Oh my God, does someone know CPR?”

I jump on and get to work.

If you’ve ever been to Ricoh, you know it has a weird entrance, due to it being engulfed by the convention centre. So the ambulance couldn’t figure out how to get in. Took them 11-12 minutes.

They arrived, used an AED (this was before they had them in rinks), restarted his heart, rushed him to a hospital.

I then proceeded back to the reception, someone handed me a beer, I chugged it, went to the bathroom and cried like a baby for 10 minutes, splashed cold water on my face, came back out and drank another 78 beers. All free.

The guy - a husband and father to a daughter - made a complete recovery.

Ever since, I renew my certification on a regular basis, and use this story to urge people to get CPR training, because if it wasn’t for some random stranger (perhaps a beer angel, sent to earth with a great purpose) causing me to stay for an extra 20 minutes, that guy would have died.

If you play sports, or if you have kids who play sports, you need to get CPR/AED training, period.

And forgive me for getting all preachy on this, but one of my most vivid memories was after it was all over, as my friends were trying to calm me down, a dear friend told me that he had never felt so scared in his entire life, because somebody was dying in front of him, and he didn’t know how to save him.

Get the training, my Buzzy friends.

Epic story. Well done, sir - to be able react as you did in that situation and dial yourself into the training. Bravo!

I took the St. John Ambulance CPR training course a few years ago and I've always been nervous if that knowledge has been retained and not replaced by stupid hockey trivia, witty zingers (dubious claim), and various memes.

Holy moly Wedgie, thanks for sharing! That must have been really scary for you, the guy and everyone who witnessed it. I'm so glad the outcome was positive.

I've had a basic AED training but I think you talked me into it CPR training. I'd like to learn it for animals too because I had a pet drop dead in front of me in the past and I didn't know what to do.

A colleague saved my sorry ass doing just that on a piece of roe deer. He managed to fix it on the 3rd attempt. Was about to pass out...

Finished the meat though - no throwing away half of it for me
