Big Bottom 6 wingers who can skate and hit and chip in on scoreboard
Better Defense Structure with 2 stay home Defenseman to play bottom pair
I really believe Chabot Zub Sanderson JBD can be top 4 D with a good Defense system

- sens4life1971
I really agree with this
Especially with the structure and defensive improvements

One of Thomson or JBD needs to become a legit top 4 dman.

They need to aquire through development or trade a real number 1 goalie. Not neccearily elite, but reliable.

Thank you! Agree 100%. The development of the young D on this team is .... I don't even know, frustratingly irritating

Friedman reporting that Sens have asked Hawks about availability of Seth Jones.

I like Jones. Would be great partner for Chabot. But an even better fit with Sanderson.

Wanted Sens to push for Jones last summer.

Also thought they had a shot at getting Matthew Tkachuk. I love skill and speed. But I like to see a mix of size and snarl added into any team hoping to be a Cup contender.

So, based on the season so far, what would do say about the big off season trade between Calgary and Florida?

Is this the case where both teams lost the trade?

Mendes article on Smith today has changed my mind on him....for the time being. Plus stringing wins together always does that despite sundays lack lustre effort.

Pretty sure you can go back to the summer for me and other posters in here talking about how Jones and his brother would be welcomed additions here in Ottawa. They're probably a package deal. Zaitsev, Formenton's rights, Jaraventie, top 3 protected first to be bumped unprotected next year.

Get it done.
And while we're at it, lets get Patty Kane too.

Be curious to see if can make a trade work for any Dman. Theyre said to be calling everyone.

Team's aren't going to touch Formenton with a 10 foot pole though, even for his rights. Especially after the Bruins debacle earlier in the year.

100% agree. Jones with Sanderson could be the best USA combo since Weirenski - Jones, which was a HUGE reason CBJ knocked out TOR

Wow.
So 12 seconds Zaitsev gives up a grade scoring chance and 2 minutes later he makes sure the jets get one. What the HELL are both he and Chabbot doing behind the net !?!?

They were doing what they were supposed to be doing, It's the forwards that just stood there and let their man walk to the front of the net all by himself.

Can't help but notice that Batherson, Pinto and DeBrincat are all -3.

They've done it again. The Sens forwards just refuse to cover their men in front of the net or in the slot. They simply do not have the slightest clue as to what their assignments are in their own zone and it's not just the third and fourth line guys - it's everybody.

Ottawa Dmen are so screwed. All the opposing player has to do is skate the puck around behind the net. No Sens forward will touch them. When the Sens Dman comes down below the goal line to meet them just flip the puck out in front of the net to one of your wide open team mates because no Sens forward will cover them because they're all too busy standing around picking their noses.

Some of these Sens hockey podcasters have started making noises about how good Smith is and how ridiculous it is to talk about silly things like structure and systems. Who pays these people to spout this nonsense?

When you watch the JETS play with 6 people on IR and without there number 1 goalie they obviously are playing as a team with every player on the same page everywhere on the ice and playing a system that even callups can easily understand. What a difference it makes when you know what you're supposed to be doing!

I thought some parts of the Sens game were good. They outshot Jets 32-22.

Effort in their own end was not very good, sometimes feeble. Multiple characters were off their mark.

Just a bad game. Forget about it. Move on to the next opportunity.

I think Timmy Superstar is back and Zub is getting close.

It's bad coaching decisions for me as usual.

Talbot's career pattern has been to play him, play him, play him----get results. A quick fact check by head coach and assistants would show this. So. Talbot gets on a roll, the team gets on a roll----coach puts the other guy in. Because of an outdated coaching myth that goalies need a break on back to back games. THEY DON'T. You buffoon.

It's like he's purposefully sabotaging the team. Oh lets go on a four game winning streak with NO Zaitsev in the line-up. DJ.....lets put Zaitsev back in. 6 game losing streak ensues.

The Team 1200 and even worse-----I'm now a reporter Methot. "just don't know what we have in JBD and Lassi Thopson"

Ya you do. Or you would if your coach played them. But he refused for two seasons---now they should be ready but aren't. You know what's gonna happen? They'll throw one or both of those players into a deal for a Chychrun, or a Seth Jones and both will be stud D men for years under a better coach in a better system.

The game last night really exemplified where this team is at. Did the Sens play badly? Not necessarily but it was not a great game. This team can’t keep playing in hopes of landing on the powerplays to score goals. The 5 on 5 play is hugely average, and the defensive zone coverage is not strong at all. I think a stronger defense core will help but as some have said, the forwards need to do their job in the defensive end.

This team hasn’t figured out how to take advantage of situations other than the powerplay. The Jets had a shaky goalie, and the Sens could not take advantage. Whereas a more experienced team in Winnipeg was able to take advantage of the Sens miscues/situations right away. That stuff will come with experience.

The Zub signing is somewhat positive. Not sure the cap implications from this but nice to see a player want to stay on Ottawa. Some money may have to be moved somewhere if another d-man is brought in and if you want to lock up Debrincat.

I get some of the frustration but I don’t really get the overreaction for JBD and Thomson. Both are good prosects but it’s not like there is a conspiracy that the team is holding back a future Josi or Makar d-man from playing. I didn’t mind their games in the NHL but neither had moments that showed that they would be anything but depth defensemen. Should they be playing over the likes of Holden, Hamonic, and Zaitsev? Maybe. Even so, I am not sure you’d see hugely different results then we have now. They haven’t had overwhelmingly great seasons in the AHL. Slipping them into the lineup is a minor lineup change. This team needs a legitimate NHL top-4 d-man to round out Chabot, Sanderson, and Zub. It’s not totally unlike when this team needed a top 6 forward or two. Relying on guys already in the system wasn’t going to address it. Adding Giroux and Debrincat did. A name like that on defence would go long way and you can still incorporate JBD and Thomson in the line up once the ugly contracts are gone.

Morning gents - fun question:

What do the Ottawa Senators need to happen to become true cup contenders from 2024-2030?

Open ended question

- AlfieisKing

Connor Bedard

Next question!

Connor Bedard

Next question!

- AdamFrench

Connor Bedard play defense?

I'll take Cale Makar or Rasmus Dahlin over Bedard at this point maybe*

(Or take Bedard and trade a couple of forwards but you get my point)
