Tanking was cool when the pens built their teams, but in 2022/2023 it doesn’t really work anymore. We did not even have to tank and we still ended up with the 2nd overall pick. How did that turn out.. interesting that we have folks critical of not “tanking” and yet they also are critical of Fletcher. I get the Fletcher criticisms, but do you want him making the pick? Kinda sounds hypocritical.

Seems like the same people are complaining when they lose AND when they win.

In reality this team is not as bad as many thought. It’s just not. That could be the Torts effect sure, but like it or not they are an avg to a feather above avg team when healthy.. sorry

They actually have some prospects that could contribute next year. I’d still clip Fletcher, but this is not a major rebuild, sorry to disappoint.

The Flyers are not an average team. They're a well below average team that is likely to finish in the bottom 10 of the league. Having JVR and Atkinson didn't lift the team last year and it likely won't this year. They've already had a 10 game losing streak. They played a couple of good games with an embarrassing effort against TB thrown in the middle. NJ took them lightly and Colorado is decimated by injury or else that game would've been over in the first period. If Hart doesn't play at a high level all season, they will sink even further. They have huge holes in their lineup and over relying on veteran role players. The rest of the league will ramp up their play.

Know your audience. Hes an annoying troll that has moved his crusade from bashing Giroux to beating the dead horse Hextall argument. Having a different opinion is fine but when its an act and its done adnauseum, it deserves to be cut down. I didnt say anything malicious. Im not here to placate your delicate sensibilities nor adhere to your over zealous adherence to the code of conduct. Your are welcome to stay in the Leaf thread. Also, you should take a modding 101 lesson from Braiden in the Montreal thread. Karen and he know how to police a thread

Trolls or not. It doesn't preclude a poster from the rules.

In addition, I came here because henious and vile things were said, reported and nothing done for a week. Someone had to clean this up so the children that visit this site don't have to see such things.

Lastly, this is a hockey discussion site. Yes things slide at times however berating posters for the sake of arguing is silly and ridiculous.

Plenty of star nhl’ers come from 10-15 & in later rounds. It is about recognizing talent not getting 1-9. Nopa was 2. What did that get us. Right now 3 of the top 5 in the league in points were drafted 25th overall or 2nd round

The tanking isn’t the be all end all answer it is about drafting correctly. EDM sucked for years with all their #1 draft picks. St. Ronnie blew his pick on BUST nopa. Fletcher has proven to be a good if not very good drafter of talent. Kaprizov was a 5th rd pick. Look at the last 5 NHL drafts not including 22.

2017 - Hischer went 1. Heiskanen at 3, Makar at 4, Petterson at 5, Suzuki at 13, Thomas at 20, Ottengier at 26, all outperformed Hischer.
2018 - Dahlin went 1 & he is good no doubt but you could argue Svechnikov at 2, Tkachuk at 4, or even Hughes at 7 is the best of that draft.
2019 - Jack Hughes went 1. You could debate Seider at 6, Zegras at 9 or Caulfield at 15 his best of that draft.
2020 - Lafrienere went 1. Stuetzle at 3, Raymond at 4, Perfetti at 10, or even Dawson Mercer at 18 are all better.
2021 - Power went 1. Beneirs at 2 McTavish at 3 all look just as good if not better.

Stop w the tanking it is about recognizing talent

- Fopa21

Tanking in todays game isn’t as simplistic as it was in the 80’s, simply acquiring the first overall pick. It’s much more wholistic than that now. Yes it’s about finishing low in the standings but it’s also about selling off players of value to acquire young talented players (Pacioretty for Nick Suzuki) and multiple draft picks in multiple drafts, it’s also about gaining cap space and weaponizing that space to acquire even more draft picks, at the end of the day it’s about utilizing the draft to build not only talent but depth within your organization.

You don’t need the first overall pick to do that. Arizona just picked 3rd, 11th and 29th overall in the first round of 2022 building tremendous depth and talent. They had five picks in the first two rounds. That’s tanking to me. They also have a bunch of picks in rounds 2 and 3 of the next two drafts. The draft isn’t an exact science, ask Ron Hextal, there’s going to be misses. Get as many picks as you can, build a core and then build around them.

I would be surprised if Frost is here next season. Looks to me like Torts has already made up his mind about Frost given his ice time and comments he has made this season already. Still to be honest I do like Frost on the half wall on the PP, he's very good at retrieving pucks and dishing. Just not enough good things from Frost however to see him part of this moving forward.

And who on the Flyers will be feeding him pucks like Nick Susuki? Last night's goal is a perfect example. Susuki is the one who stole the puck at the blue line with tenacious back pressure, turned it around and fed Susuki at the left dot for an easy finish.

I agree that its not a major rebuild, however this Flyers team desperately needs high end talent and they are not going to get it from their current system nor via a hockey trade or free agent signing. Their only hope is the draft and this year is the year they must do it! The Flyers have some good players on their team starting with Hart, TK, Farabee, Cam and Couts when they come back. They just need to augment these players with some high end skill. Getting say Fantilli this year and adding him to Gauthier, York, Foerster and even Andrae makes this an entirely new team next year, and that is something as a fan I would be very excited to see!

I agree. I see some folks talking about a 7 to 10 year rebuild on here. Does anyone honestly think Flyers fans are going to put up with a rebuild that takes that long? If things are done correctly(with some luck thrown in) it can be a much shorter timeframe than that IMO. Of course, Chuckles would have to be removed before anything can be headed in the right direction most likely. I'm not really expecting much from Couts though. A 30 year old hockey player with 2 back surgeries makes me wonder if he'll ever get back to what he was.

I'm sure having a guy like that helps Caufield, but I have also seen him manufacture lots of goals on his own. He is a gifted goal scorer which the Flyers have virtually none of. Perhaps York proves me wrong at some point, but hard for him to do that while he is toiling down in the AHL with the Phantoms.

I understand what you are saying. However, young defenseman not named Makar do take longer to develop than forwards do. York to me showed he belonged in the NHL last season, however I applaud Torts for giving him the minutes on the Phantoms this year to develop his game more. It is much better for York to play 20 minutes a night for the Phantoms versus 11 minutes a night on the Flyers. The Flyers are going no where this year whether York is with them or not.

7 to 10 year rebuilds ? To me that’s just guys spouting off. Vegas was able to build a team from scratch in a year…the Rangers retooled, drafted and traded their way back to respectability within a two year window…. Is it easy ? Of course not. Will a guy like Fletcher be able to accomplish it….that’s doubtful. Quite frankly had the Flyers done a better job drafting and developing their talent they wouldn’t be in this position….had they not exasperated that by handing out and overpaying on average NHL free agents we wouldn’t be in this place. A GM needs to develop/draft, trade and use free agency ….he needs to use all the tools he has access to. He needs to bring in the right guys to teach and coach. To suggest a team need just this side of a decade to turn a franchise around show a complete lack of understanding on what it takes to build a team. It all starts at the top with the guy making the decisions….get the right guy in there and this shouldn’t be a process that takes anywhere close to that.
