You shouldn't have a difficult time hearing me then considering how close to my bum hole your face is all the time.

Time for another one of your fishing reports...

91 pages? Come on people, let’s get to 100 before the new blogger starts. There’s still so much to unravel.

I have some doubts... the Easter Bunny doesn't have USA citizenship... he/she/it can't be president.

Speaking of make believe creatures killing each other, have you seen this? It’s a trailer for season 2, but season 1 was also killer, pardon the pun.

Ya that is a funny show...

I saw a couple of episodes of season 1. They must have taken a year or two off...

Edit: I just saw this preview was 3 years ago.

Yeah, it’s not new, and no sign of a third season, but damn was it good, if you enjoy gratuitous violence etc.

New blog is up:

When Ilya Mikheyev hit the free-agent market this summer, one of his top priorities was seeking a full-time top-six opportunity.

In Toronto, Mikheyev was deployed on a shutdown third line with David Kampf. They played a checking role last season with a high share of defensive-zone starts and were routinely pitted against the opposition’s best players. Mikheyev, in fact, played the highest percentage of his five-on-five minutes against elite competition of any Leafs forward in 2021-22 according to PuckIQ’s data. It wasn’t by a huge margin — Toronto distributed the tough minutes load pretty evenly last season — but he still came out on top.

Mikheyev brought secondary scoring to the table, including a career-high 21 goals, but he wasn’t deemed to have enough finishing ability or skill to earn a complementary top-six role. It frustrated him and even reportedly led to a trade request after the 2020-21 campaign according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Vancouver came along this offseason and offered Mikheyev everything he could have hoped for. The Canucks were prepared to make a huge financial commitment, paying him nearly five million annually for four years when many clubs viewed him as a luxury bottom-six piece. They had a tempting top-six spot next to Elias Pettersson calling his name. They even had a fellow Russian in Andrei Kuzmenko — both players represented by agent Dan Milstein — for an enhanced comfort factor.

All of that also meant more responsibility and pressure when he landed on the West Coast. Generating offence and scoring goals was a nice bonus in Toronto, now it was an expectation.

Mikheyev’s been everything the Canucks could have hoped for. He’s third among all Canucks forwards in average five-on-five ice time, ahead of Pettersson even, and has scored eight goals and 15 points in 23 games. He’s played over 200 five-on-five minutes with Pettersson in which the duo has narrowly outshot the opposition, controlled 52.9 percent of the expected goal share and outscored opponents 19-13.

Those are impressive numbers considering how much the Canucks generally struggle at controlling play.

Why have they worked as a combination?

The biggest concern regarding their fit was whether Mikheyev could bury enough of the chances Pettersson would set up. Pettersson has a rare, uncanny ability to help his line convert shots at an unusually high efficiency but Mikheyev’s history of lacklustre finishing in Toronto suggested he might be a gravitational force. Mikheyev’s held up his end of the bargain. It hasn’t required a ton of finesse but rather smart timing for how to find open space in the inner slot.

His goal against Montreal was a good example of how he timed his off-puck movement into the slot. Mikheyev patiently lurked to the side until he sensed the perfect moment to charge the blue paint — not charging the interior too early where he’d be tied up, or too late where he’d miss the opportunity.

Pettersson’s become creative at leveraging Mikheyev’s speed to gain offensive-zone possessions. From the first day of training camp in Whistler, Pettersson’s experimented with lob and bank passes for Mikheyev to chase onto. It’s like watching a point guard send an alley-oop pass that only the big man can catch, except in this case it’s the recipient’s speed rather than his vertical that’s paying dividends.

Look at how far behind the play Mikheyev starts before winning the puck cleanly from a Pettersson bank pass.

The two connected for a similar play off the end boards in the second period, too. This time, Mikheyev didn’t even bother wasting his turbo boost, instead relying on his size to lean on the defender and win the battle.

Mikheyev’s combination of size, speed and defensive acumen is a unique fit on a Canucks roster with a lot of one-dimensional wingers who struggle defensively.

Vancouver’s penalty kill has been an issue this season, but you can’t say that Mikheyev’s underwhelmed there either. Mikheyev’s goals-against rate is tied with Nils Åman for the lowest among the club’s regular PK forwards and his shots-against rate is second best.

Mikheyev’s probably due to cool off a bit offensively but he’s been full value for the big contract he signed so far.

Management taking notes on how Pee Wee coach St Louis is doing with Montreal, figure Henrik can’t be all that bad. Plus he’s already under contract.
