Quinn is a winger full stop: building around a defensmen that can’t defend ensures that the team will never be competitive
- CanuckDon

All of his stats and possesion metrics show that his offense outweighs his defensive lapses. I'd rather have a guy who contributes to 3 goals for and 2.9 against than a guy who just holds the game at a 0-0 tie.

You need skill to win, all the great teams had a combination of both. The first thing an NHL management group has to do is decide on what type of team they want to build. Then start building from there. All kinds of different teams have won a Stanley Cup, but if you just wing-it with BPA it doesn’t work imo.

Since 2011 we’ve been suffering from not focussing on the D & keeping it at a high standard. Once it got past the point of no return & not drafting D here we are. Of all the drafts to take D it was OJ. Not going to knock the pick but it’s why picking D high makes me nervous. Not every draft is great for D in the 1st.

Of course they (frank)ed up: Aquilini wanted a retool. Again. JR wasn’t coming in for a rebuild and anyone that thought/ thinks that is a delusional drug addict
- CanuckDon

That retool notion got us Guds. Later it was Miller. Both were high costs. Guds shows how hard it is to get top 4 D & costly. Retool was doomed to failure without any top D in the system. I wanted UFA AP but it got no traction in here.

I didn’t grow up in Vancouver, island kid, and I was a Flyers fan at an early age so perhaps it’s easier for me. Even though I’ve followed them for what seems my whole life. They just continue to disappoint me. My GAF meter is pretty low.
- LeftCoaster

I mean to be fair, as much as I also claim to be apathetic ... the GAF meter is probably pretty high for anyone posting on page 500 in an obscure hockey blog ... myself included.

JR has zero respect for Bruce. He's openly admitting this while Bruce is still his coach. Wow

- Nucker101

BB it isn’t his coach. Why be nice or phoney about it? FA’s boy not his.

Respect and professionalism. There's a reason why everyone loves and respects a guy like Pat Quinn, he was all class.

JR:

Ownership has not interfered with any decisions that I have made"

"We are not looking toward a rebuild it's more of a retool. Looking at acquiring younger NHL guys vs draft picks that will help in 4-5 years. We have to go about it in a way that's not a long term rebuild"

Age gap 2.0 is here

- Nucker101

Smells like it & what FA wants still. The last sentence is do much better than JB. It also says FA has a mandate that his POHO follows so the beat goes on. Doesn’t matter til FA is gone.

Can we still trade him for a third at TDL?

We have 2/6 defenseman that could possibly help this team win in the right situation ... and one plays pond hockey and the other's NHL career is approaching it's end.

Factor in you probably need 8 nhlers to account for injuries and playing on west coast, even if this team decided to rebuild right now it would be 5-6 years till we could have something that represents a big league D core. Without that rebuild commitment, I can see the 10 years being bantied about here being realistic.

I don't know. I haven't watched half the games. I wake up each day curious to see what is happening, but don't really care. Can there be a middle ground of somewhere in the middle, just like our team?

I am fine with a reclamation project, just not as a main piece.

My guess is they aren't getting what they thought they could get.

- Reubenkincade

I read the want for Bo as an NHLer that fits in now a high pick reclamation project & a 1st they need to build on.

Could you imagine if your employer was planning your replacements for months and not hiding it from you? Bruce won’t get another job so he should have some fun with this. Use a German accent for all press conferences. Play only defensmen on the PP. send Quinn to Abby etc
- CanuckDon

He can't put players on waivers. but I like where you're heads at with this.

What's strange is that the 2 were cordial when JR came on - the press was saying that they had always wanted to work together, etc. Then it turns to JR saying he didn't know Bruce had a contract this year, to openly saying he is finding someone else.

It IS like he has dementia. It is incredible that Rutherford can even show his face, and even more amazing that he is in the press so much while the new Swedish GM does his best Paul Maurice tool in the toolshed facials

- TJTD

Disagree

It’s like JR was saying what any POHO would say in his position. The problem is when has a POHO ever been hired under those circumstances. I’d bet FA never disclosed BB had the option.

Elliotte Friedman : I think you will see a coaching change in 1-2 weeks and it will be Tocchet.
Also keep an eye on Sergei Gonchar as an assistant.

I could like a real D coach for a change.
