It is another contract being signed a year earlier than necessary, just because a team burnt a season to sign a player, out of college.
- Reubenkincade

Yeah college is starting to look like something to avoid. Round 1 prospects become too expensive and the late round guys might bolt on you before you can ever sign them.

Yup, trade trade trade.

Marek/Friedman repeating that Canucks are looking for players that can step in and take roster spots right away in a Horvat deal.

This franchise is so disappointing, on so many levels.

- 1970vintage

They are fvcking morons if true. Get futures, lots of them. Make our own pick higher by a) bringing up AHL players to fill spots and b) seeing what we have in future NHL talent. If you want ready NHL players, use some future assets to acquire them in the off season when they are cheaper and plentiful.

But you can't say no to talent just because of that. What they need to do is change the way college prospects work. After 4 years they need to burn a FULL season before becoming UFA, not just 1 month and signing in August. And get rid of the 1st year burn, though some teams use that to sign said later round picks and entice their 1st rounders not to finish. The amount of kids jumping ship from the team that drafts them is quite low though.

I wouldn't have a problem drafting Fantilli or Wood out of college, but as Retinalz states above, some of these rules need to change.

I just think they should be more flexible. It shouldn’t be “only players who can step in”, or “only prospects” or “only draft picks”. Each different team will have different things. The best deal might be for draft picks, or teams might have a solid prospect, or it could be a player ready to strip in, or some combination. Stop defining what the deal has to be before you make it.

Yeah, NCAA should be changing their rules to allow players to sign pro contracts that don’t take effect until the player decides to leave college, like how teams can sign their picks from the CHL (or other leagues)

They'll both be pricey to sign after their ELC's though and could look to leave once they reach UFA status

I doubt either plays 4 full years at college. Fantili will sign right after the draft, Wood apparently lived with the Bedards for a good while. So he prob has a soft spot for Vancouver as well.

Or they could put a limit of how many games need to be played, before the 1st year is used/burnt.
Maybe 25 pro games, of a regular season. Or use the TDL as the cut-off date.

Or better yet, eliminate the cap.

Elliotte on Tocchet situation:

"They've basically made a hire."

Mentions he doesn't know when they will make the change but they didn't want to do it on the road and only want to make 1 announcement.

I like the TDL. Shouldn’t be able to play games for a team after the deadline if you aren’t on the roster, or in the minors.

After Tocchet's 4 week notice then, which is in about 3 weeks. Just in time for the big playoff push, the 8 million dollar Kuzmenko signing and the trade of Bo and Luke.

They have something in place for players coming out of the Euro leagues, having to be signed by some time in December, I believe. Same should apply to NCAA.

Cap has to stay. There are teams that are much richer than others, and owners who just see their spots team as a toy they can spend money on. The Cap was put in place because of teams like Detroit buying the Stanley Cup.

This has all been handled poorly. People were quick to point out Benning's lack of professionalism but JR has handled the Bruce situation terribly since the end of last season. Just amateur hour.

Just thinking about this whole Horvat for win now players thing. They might as well just sign Horvat for whatever because they aren’t going to get a better player in return, only a cheaper player, and therefore the opportunity to “win now” is highest with Horvat, not without him.

Morons.
