The choice was Schmidt over Tanev. Not Myers. Big mistake. Also JV over Toffoli, another big mistake. Those two changes probably put us in the playoffs that year, and then we don't trade for OEL and Garland as our 1st is around 20 not 9.
- Retinalz

Perhaps, but if they hadn't signed Myers then resigning Tanev wouldn't have been as difficult to do, and you could have had Schmidt and Tanev - not that this would have been a huge upgrade...

Going against my old history penchant.

Resign Tanev not Myers.
- 7pts vs 9pts
- 1.5m cap savings

That shift alone set the Canucks back.

- Nighthawk

I think those of us that saw value in Tanev argued that it was more than just about straight up points with him and that guys like OEL/Myers weren't going to see the same powerplay time here that they did with their previous teams so just judging a dman swap based on points alone is incredibly flawed.

You can't just sign or trade for a guy who puts up 35-40 points on team where he gets regular PP time and then expect the same production on your team when you gize him less/zero PP time. That's not how it works.

That's why 5v5 scoring is better to look at, especially when discussing non-1st line offensive players who aren't going to get PP1 time

How was the choice a LHD over a RHD?(I know Schmidt plays both sides but still) Also Myers was brought in to a defensive dman clearly, because he's never been given regular PP2 time, let alone PP1 time, he's always out on every PK, and has played more shutdown minutes than easy minutes, sounds a lot more like how Tanev was used than Schmidt was.

The writing was on the wall for Tanev as soon as they signed Myers, doesn't matter if it didn't happen during the same year.

The Myers signing was always weird, he's always been best suited for easier minutes and has a heavy shot on the PP, yet here he's been used in a shutdown role and gets heavy PK usage and basically zero PP usage.

Same with OEL after his knee injuries, he's just not built to play tough minutes now. Just bizarre fits.

That's why this defense is such an expensive mess, they don't fit together. I can't blame the coaches for it, not even Green who I dislike.

I'll say the same thing if they trade Myers and go out and sign John Klingberg next summer, just idiotic roster building.

Agree. D play suffered as neither Myers nor OEL was close to Tanev.

I can’t wait for the 9ers to thrash the Seagulls. So excited! Geno is going to be running for his life.

On D getting points OEL is on pace for 40. That said say we live with that trade & Myers never signed we would be no worse off.

Adding up all JB’s mistakes it compounded in such a horrible way this mess in an incredible task to unravel. Fans can go on & on about the new regime but ignoring what unraveling has to happen is ignoring how bad the hand dealt was. Then not forcing trades is a MUST. The flat cap & so many teams up against it only further exacerbates the difficulty of trading league wide. Like it or not we all need patience no different than Mgmt.

Miller 7/8m
Boeser 3/6.65m

On the surface many can argue those contracts. We gotta believe offers were not good enough & they couldn’t let them walk. Boeser’s QA was the legacy JB left behind. Miller & his 99pts & his other seasons showed a big uptick in scoring for the team. Boeser only got 3yrs cuz Mgmt not sold on him & easier to trade sooner with less term. Miller they locked up but he needs proper linemates to hide his warts. Oh well. Bo isn’t a shutdown C. Both can rack up points but Miller drives play much better.

Roster design & better cap management is still the priority.

Easy to say monumental task to do.
2 top 4 D away from being good to great. Trading Bo we can overcome his loss if the right pieces come back. This is why they want a hockey trade not prospects & picks that are unproven. The ask is one matter but if we get at least a RHD with real top 4 ceiling & a 1st it’s a good start. Not getting the C can be manageable. The focus has to be D if lose somewhere else.

I’m no Don Cherry…

Idgaf about nationality. Our range I want Smith also want more high picks from trades along with deepening our prospect pool with top talent if not able to get other needs.

Maybe but I predict a serious offer they pull the trigger on. Was no fan of the rumoured Miller offer.
