Yeah, Marky and Tanev really put the Flames over the hump. Getting embarrassed like that against the Oilers is worse than not making the playoffs for Flames fans.

The more picks you have, the higher odds you have of hitting a homerun and finding a difference maker. But yes, ideally you have good drafting/development to increase your odds.

I'd rather fail trying that way instead of getting stuck with castoff age gap garbage

- Nucker101

Castoff age gap garbage like Marino? Dach? Half of Florida’s roster? Trash pro scouting. The odds our 2nd round pick turns out better than Bear has to be less than 1%. Take an online stats course

Not sure why some are so concerned about only getting a late 1st etc. All the good teams have several players in their lineups that are late 1st, 2nd 3rd, 4th and 5th round picks.
It is all about how you draft, which the Canucks are terrible at.

- Reubenkincade

The Rags suck at developing high picks. Explain this?

Anyone can draft with a decent scouting team. Few teams know & can develop.

Apparently the Red wings have put Vrana on waivers, hopefully they are considering a Canuck trade.

Not sure what you’re asking here? Are you saying only a few teams draft and develop players? Those teams suppling the majority of players?

I don’t believe they targeted Stillman. They had to take a contract back and the cap space was so they could acquire Bear. They had been after Bear for months but couldn’t creat the space

Come on! There’s lots of players drafted in the 2nd round that are better than Stillman. Probably 3rd,4th …….
Just need a good scouting staff

My main point is that you want to avoid trading for players that teams are willingly giving up. Marino, Reinhart and Forsling fit that bill of actual needle movers that were being shopped so those are fine examples to argue against me.

Flames didn't want to lose Tkachuk or Bennett, they wanted out.

Dach isn't a needle mover yet, he's being gifted top line and top PP and once his sh% comes down his stat line will look bad considering that usage. He's a clear 3rd wheel with Suzuki/Caufield, it's a Sven Baertschi with Bo Horvat type of deal so far.

Now let me list the 50-100 players traded that don't move the needle and you're going to end up with a similar/lower % of impact players compared to players drafted in the late 1st round and 2nd round

but who cares?

I'll take the 5% odds of finding a Rasmus Andersson in round 2 over having Stillman because I can find a Stillman for free anytime.

You say higher odds like it goes from 1% to 50%. Where it's more like 1% to 1.2%

I don't give a poop because it's better than the 80-90% odds of more Granlunds

I think it depends on who’s drafting, some teams find gems in the later rounds, Jamie Benn 5th round pick etc…

There are about 700 players in the NHL, they all must come from the top 10 of the 1st round.

According to these guys, yes.

Canuck fans:
"The odds of hitting on picks outside of the top 10 are so low so I'm okay with trading picks."

Also Canucks fans:
"We can't blow it up and lose and develop a losing culture, I'd rather be competitive and draft in the teens"
"Why does our prospect pool suck?"
