I have no illusions of VAN ever winning the NHL lottery.

I need two wines to give to my mother in law for Christmas. Both around $20 that I can get at the local MLC. Go!

Those who clamour for players with size I like 6’ or 6’1” around 180#+ generally speaking. They can fill in as they mature. If good to great skating it’s the foundation I like.
- Nighthawk

Yeah, if anything I like the lanky guys because they have more room to develop as the get stronger, but the issue is that a guy like Lekkermaki just avoids contact, which is why I bet teams allowed him to "fall" along with him being a winger.

I remember when Sam Bennett got mocked for not being able to do a pull-up, but just watching him play it was obvious that he wasn't soft so once he got NHL training and got stronger he developed into a guy who throws his weight around, drops the gloves and makes a living with his play around the net and along the boards.

Lanky guys that have good skill/IQ/skating and aren't afraid of contact are the prospects who have untapped potential as they fill out and get stronger.

I think NJ should look at Schenn and Timo Meier if they want to get bigger and tougher to play against.
- Nucker101

I would pay more for him then Horvat... I know W vs C but he is a hellava player.

Should teams stay away from Canuck players, because to a man there’s no heart or will to win, or should they collect them because to a man they are under performing and will over deliver in a trade?

Always seem to do better once they leave though

He’s also an RFA at the end of the season, not a UFA like Horvat, who just had a 35 goal campaign last year and he’s set to have another big year offensively again. I would trade for him before Horvat as well. If he was in fact available.

I think he's a better player than Bo, but I think the C premium swings it into Bo's favour. But NJ already has Hughes-Hischier-Mecrcer/Haula so for them it does make sense to prefer Timo.

Yup & why BPA ain’t my thing. Identify the core pieces & add to them. Hire the right coach who is onboard & in sync with Mgmt.

1st round is for top RHD & C’s if there. Later rounds picks take longer to develop so need & specific skill sets. Speed & mobility akways are a good start. Projects for late picks but still must be good skaters. Todays game is skating & speed & the hardest to teach.

- Nighthawk

I'm okay with BPA if you can do the rest of your job correctly or realize BPA isn't just the left over undersized winger. Those are normally the skilled players but you can't have just a bunch of soft skilled players.

GM's have talked about BPA into the 3rd round.

His RFA qualifying offer is like $10M to retain his RFA rights so he's basically a UFA

Bingo. It's not that BPA is wrong, it's that the Canucks analysis of BPA is wrong.

Teams would be asking about talking contract during trade negotiations much like Horvat.

Drafting is also about 4-6 years down the road. Lekkerimaki I was harping on his bad game yesterday. I had him ranked 15th. I am fine with the pick. He could be Kuzmenko in 5 years. That's fine but you need to find another scoring 200' C for him to play with. You need a capable tough more physical 3rd wheel. Whether through drafting or in trades or over pay as everyone does in free agency.

You've got to find that mix. The Canucks get that part wrong continually and maybe draft some (frank)en defenders.

Say Bingo and he shows up lol but yeah it is our scouting of BPA that is lacking.... I hate taking the faller in the draft. Seems to always be a bad pick.

Usually BPA is set by the vision of Senior management. They have their meetings with the scouts and state the types of players they are looking for.
At least that is my understanding of how teams determine BPA.

Not a fan of this but to be honest don't know all the players that well.

2nd line winger
4 line winger
4/5 defender in the future?
3rd Round pick.

Ya, I preferred the deal with the Habs.
Also, when they 1st put that out, they called McDonough a defenseman, in the proposals they were suggesting, so consider the source.

That's the thing though, the payoff needs to be calculated when ranking these kids. If a guy turns out to be a 25-30 goal scoring skilled winger that's nice, but it's a player that you can find through trade/free agency a lot easier than it is to even find a solid two-way second line center or top 4 dman so it's something you just have to factor in when building a rankings list.

When you hit on a C or D, the payoff is higher than hitting on a winger

You're correct, I also think that the head scout has a decent amount of influence though. Harvey deserves some blame here along with Allvin if Lekk busts

More wingers and limited potential for Canucks. Sounds like a Benning trade.
