FA shares some blame with Benning there. Hard to GM a team that needs a rebuild when the owner is saying to continue building around an aging core than can't compete anymore. Benning was a bad GM by every means except for a few good picks and a couple good trades. I just don't think any other GM could have done much better of a job with FA in their ear forcing quick fixes.
We definitely need a better scouting department, something JR is not well known for.

Yeah I'm getting a real chuckle out of watching Musk burn Twitter to the ground as well.

The organizational issues definitely start with ownership. It trickles down from there and I don’t see it changing any time soon.

Seattle kinda stood pat on their first draft, looks like Francis wanted to get another high pick, which he did, they proceeded to draft two centers #2 overall and #4 overall. I’ve always maintained that you build through the middle of the ice. Hopefully that serves them well for years to come.

As much as I hate the idea, if could be a good idea to blow up the team and rebuild, just to start fresh after OEL and his contract are gone. Unless we have an ELC to replace him, buying him out will cost more cap space than it is worth.
- Retinalz

Waiting 4 years until his contract is up is a much bigger cost to the future of this club.

“Wow. #pens announce defenseman Kris Letang is out indefinitely after suffering a stroke on Monday.

Team says he is "not experiencing any lasting effects" and will continue to undergo tests over the next week. He reported symptoms on Monday.

Letang also had a stroke in 2014.”

Crazy news! Even being in the best shape doesn’t protect you from heart issues. Hope he gets better.

I think I remember loving what Benning was doing in the 2014 draft, saying it’s nice to have a real GM who can acquire picks and build a prospect pool. But then he just proceeded to piss it all away over a short period of time.

I had a different response here, then I looked at cap projections and realized, that 2 years of a 4.8m dead cap hit isn't really going to hurt us as it is after the cap is near 95m. Though i agree for different reasons than most, I think buying out OEL is a legitimate option, but we need a cheap defender ready to eat those minutes. We don't have it in the pipeline, and I don't see a point in overpaying one in UFA when we will all just female dog about having both and OEL dead cap and an overpaid replacement.

Thats terrible news. Always liked him as a defenseman. One of the best over the last 10 or so years.

The idea was always to compete and bridge the gap between Bo and the twins using whatever means necessary (picks). It was always the wrong idea and poor execution.

If you gave Bo 8x7.5 before Miller signed, he probably signed it...

The difference is that we have Hughes, EP at 23/24 instead of Hank/Dank at 33(?).

Sorry I think I accidentally flagged this.

I remember Bo mentioning about getting to playoffs and being on a winning team. I am thinking he may have told them that he will wait and see how the season moves along.

Sure the ages are different, but, imo, the wrong players to try build around, in both scenarios.

I don't think they are. EP is definitely a guy you build around, Hughes is still an elite defenseman, you just need a younger Luke Schenn to cover for his defensive issues.

In 2014 a rebuild was needed due to aging core. Now a retool is needed due to a young elite core.

Edit: the only reason it makes sense to give up on our young core is if the mess Benning left if truly so bad that it will prevent us from building around them.

I don't believe this is the case, but we need to make a lot of trades over the next couple seasons.
