We all think we know what a player can do... and then they get to Buffalo

- DirtyDan

This sounds alot like trades as well. It used to be my biggest complaint with TDL deals...guys would be scoring 25 a season, traded to Buffalo and they become a 10G guy.

But its not just buffalo think of all the young guys around the league who never got good Arizona being a lazy example. How long did we bang the upl drum and now its the levi drum. We need real NHL players. We have a lot of guys become good but good wont be a playoff caliber team we need stars. Horvat would fit that bill and i personally dont like him since jrs. I saw him play a few times and was underwhelming every time.
- hubie

I'm not talking about young players i'm talking about established players.

We think we know who we're getting and then they start playing here and they're a shell of themselves (Leino, Erhoff, Hall etc.).

Ville Leino played one good year and of his 7 nhl years 2 of his 3 best years were here
Erhoff wasnt bad for a guy at the start of the tank
Hall never played with Eichel who got hurt right away so who was he playing with to get points?

I think the short term goals should be to

1. improve the 3rd line of casey, olofsson and vinny

figure out if krebs fits in that slot or not

we have seen enough of casey and olofsson IMO and it's fare to say they are not long term fixtures if the goal is to be good

2. upgrade the slot joker plays

if that means drop joker to 3rd pr fine, if it means ship him out, also fine

3, figure out if 6k is in long term plans, and that only comes with nhl games

4. get johnson, levi and portillo signed in the spring

5, do everything possible to let cozens, peterka and quinn grow as a line

6. work on special teams

- homiedclown

Get rid of oloffson? No way he’s a sniper where ever he is, he shown that last game. He doesn’t always have to be in the office.

Okposo Moulson Sandella Ott Rivet Sabotka... I could keep going. None of them were as good here as they were where they came form.

He wasn't good. He should have helped but he didn't.

My point is proven though. Players get here and aren't the same. Doesn't matter this reason for it.

A lot of what we thought was good, turned into a lot of junk and wasted money.

He was signed to 10 years he played 3 here....

Atleast erhoff was an nhl d man, not a point guy like they hoped and was vastly over paid, at half contract hed have been somewhat fine.... maybe

Ehrhoff the player was fine, it was the contract that they had to get out of. They HAD to buy him out or they would have been stuck with him, and his recapture penalty was massive if he would have retired.

yes I played

your hand comparison is dumb, it's all about what side you shoot on

- homiedclown

What side a dman plays has little to do with shooting. It's about being able to pull the puck off the boards with your backhand and get rid of it before the winger is in your face. Playing your off hand isn't very difficult at lower levels of hockey, it's very hard for most players at the highest levels.

If it were easy, the Sabres would have never gotten the haul they did for Risto.

those 6 are not going anywhere

so you have all the prospects, as well as casey, olofsson, krebs etc to come up with 3 players to round out your top 9, or go outside the organization

if olofsson was a long term solution he would have received more than a short term deal IMO

what is your top 9 based on all of our players and prospects for 18 months from now?

but samualsson and dahlin have already played RD in the NHL

putting chicken man and power on LD and dahlin and samuelsson on RD would be a massive upgrade over joker in the top 4

Pretty much, also much harder stopping a outside rush to the net

My only qualm with trading Vic is there better be a plan on who is replacing 30 goals a year. Until Quinn reliably puts the puck in the net Vic is needed. If it's part of a Horvat deal sure thing. If he's traded for a defenseman, we just lost the guy who scores the most game winners on the team. Vic does seem to have a shred of the elusive "clutch" gene.

I would try to find a team with en elite setup man. Remember the year Cheechoo or somebody scored 50 with Joe Thorton setting them up? If Vic was one of the many Crosby wingers over the years he could pot 40 a season.

Sabres do a natural shift on ice with there Dman, all throughout the game they flop Left to right. Chychrun wouldn't be playing RD all the time.
