You know MOST of the current coaches also have a similarly poor first-three year record for playoff success.
Sullivan and Cooper had faster success than most (Sullivan winning in his third year, and Cooper making it to the finals in his third year), but some of the others:
Laviolette: .333
Torts: 0 (didn't make the playoffs until his 4th year - but he did win the cup in his 5th)
De Boer: 0 (didn't make the playoffs until the 4th year, and made them only once in his first 7 coaching)
Boudreau: .464
Sutter: .423
Cassidy: .333
I mean Bowness made the playoffs once in his first 9 years of coaching Ottawa, Boston and Winnipeg.
There's a lot of names of guys that a lot of people here would love to have as the Leafs head coach.
Barry Trotz didn't make the playoffs for his first 5 seasons, and didn't win a round until his 12th year coaching.
Paul Maurice didn't make the playoffs for his first 3 seasons and didn't win a round until his 7th year coaching.
It's easy to get mad at the coach, but all these guys who are supposedly so much better all started somewhere - and they didn't start as well. - Monkeypunk
Never, ever ask me to put a megadowner Leaf spin in context!

But did either of the coaches above who had a low playoffs winning % ( or no playoff %) in their first three years also have a team with a really high reg season winning% for those same years?
I dont believe most of them were gifted teams with as much talent as the team keefe was gifted

Gifted? He started coaching a team that was 9-10-4

I think you've spent far too much time rebutting my flippant reply. (although maybe this was for the "but the playoffs!" commentariat in general)
For the record, I'm not a Keefe hater - I'm actually mostly ambivalent. I think I've criticized him in the past for galaxy braining some decisions and, perhaps, being oddly pro-line blender in the regular season and too rigid in the post-season. But I'm not married to that observation either.
It's easy to hindsight/reductively criticize a coach for early playoff exits. What do I know? 🤷 - mjones242
More often than not what happens is that someone posts something here, and then *I'm* curious about the details of the context, so I look it up. Sometimes it's inconclusive and there's really not much to say about it - and sometimes it swings one way or the other. I see the lack of playoff success, and then wonder how many other highly respected coaches had immediate success. Let's face it - when you're new, and until you accomplish something, you're nobody.
I mean Dan Bylsma comes in, takes over from Therrien in 2008, and goes 18-3, and then wins the cup in his first year - and while the Pens leading up to Crosby's prime years continued to be a force, they passed the 2nd round only once, and didn't win a game in the third round under Bylsma - and he hasn't coached in the NHL since 2017.
So in this case, it was really more curiousity - because personally I also have reservations about Keefe, but I also really love possession hockey. I've always hated the dump and chase or dump and run styles . . . although there are teams constructed to really utilize that style, too.

Have you not watched the last month? Keefe has been coaching a team with a bunch of scrubs on defence, often with a fourth string goalie in net and running up a pretty good record

Ya no one is taking that away from him. I havent agreed with some of the things hes done over the years, but overall i like keefe.
But this season doesn't have anything to do with the context of the reply asking about the level of talent the other coaches had.
