I said it was the Flyers best shot at being competitive, not "how great it would be".

And I'd still take being a team with identity and a plan for roster building beyond flushing entire years down the toilet and simply praying year after year for lottery luck with zero long range guarantees on the other side.

- bmeltzer
Do you see the Flyers having any plan? If so can you explain it to me as I do not see one.

They have been flushing years down the toilet for a decade plus now. Need a new approach.

As far as an identity, will they ever embrace one that doesn’t involve archaic approaches and glorifying the muckers and grinders. Why not an identity of a skilled team?

What does it say about a GM and an organization that drafts, trades for, and signs players who need to be pushed simply to give a consistent professional EFFORT?

It’s always convenient for the FO to blame the players.

Well the players who have been here for the last 5 years are not all that good. Yet here they still are on the roster. Again shows how bad a job this GM has done.

Think the FO or other men still in place are employed in an organization with ownership that has the slightest clue?

Say for the NYR or Boston?

I understand your point about players though.

Cant wait to see your next pathetic topic you choose to demonstrate your making an ass-out-of-yourself abilities.

The identity thing is, was, and continues to be bullsh!t.

How can you build an identity with half the team hurt and what healthy players you sadly do have shouldn't be on the team moving forward.

I think Torts is a good coach but that "identity " thing he speaks of is a used car salesman pitch to win over the casuals.

No way they are still employed. I wonder if there are provocative photos going around they have as leverage!!!

Roberts’ is who needs to step in and no one has any idea of he even cares or pays attention to the Flyers in any way.

Two back surgeries:
One goes just great and player back on the ice like never happened,
the other is named Coots.

Can't make this script up!

Back and neck injuries are tricky, though. Those can be nagging for some time. Think about how often you need your back just to get around. Then picture being an athlete.

You’re not playing for anything, so I have no problem with them trying to be extra careful.

Honestly, who cares if this year's team is playing with more effort? If you truly believe that, then it should be painfully obvious that the whole "effort" initiative isn't worth jack squat. At best, it's the only marketing angle left for a team that doesn't have anything to sell except concessions and merchandise.

Really? Package Cutter Gauthier and Tyson Foerster with Hayes for a cap dump?

Jesus Christ.

No point really. The Flyers should be trying to acquire cap dumps, and not paying to offload their own players.

Similar to getting a first for Lehtera.

Weaponize cap space.

It goes back further. Look at Holmgrens last 4 drafts.
- furio16

Sbisa and Morin were awful 1st-round picks. Marshall, Klotz and Ghoul were easily avoidable wastes of top-90 picks.

179th-overall on Nick Luukko because nepotism > winning.

Of the good ones, Ghost was jerked around for years by multiple coaches. Chief tried so hard to ruin Coots by playing him w/ garbage players and burying him in the dzone. Maroon was banished for still undisclosed behavioral reasons. And JVR was traded away for Luke Schenn, lol.

Not to mention all the times the Flyers didn't even have their top-90 picks because Homer was so busy trading them away.

I also think that Torts knows (as he has admitted) that this team needs talent.
I think he is playing into the silent tank. He plays ZM and ND and seeler so much so that there is no other excuse. Add Sedlak to that list, although he has looked surprising decent.

Not buying it. Tortorella didn't take this job to tank. His ego won't allow it. He plays who he plays because he thinks out of the choices he has. That's the best way to try and win.

Hextall's draft record wasn't great, but he actually got the top-pair D and #1 goalie that eluded the Flyers for decades.

TK was a hell of a value pick, too.

Hextall drafted I believe 13-14 players in 5 drafts that have become NHL players. Obviously lacking an elite player so it can't be great, but it wasn't awful either. Gave the team a nice base to build on and left the team better than when he started.

Name those 13-14 everyday NHL players. Not part timers. Defend to the end. He was/is and average Andy at best.

Gave them a nice base before reality set in and the picks were exposed to being nothing special by any means nor as good as the hype. Then the current GM blew it by keeping them all.

Hisbplayer usage though... ZM on the second line?! No way that's not purposeful. I hope Torts knows that he needs 2 years of good drafting to be able to effectively put his legacy on this team.

Right now itvlooks bad for all involved. I really gone that Torts has a long term approach and view. Maybe in 2 or 3 years, when the top picks hit the ice, he can then put his stamp on things and say "I fixed this"
If Torts is trying to win with this current team then he is as big of a joke as the country club is. I hope to God that he has a bigger plan than looking good this season because it's not happening

With the current players he has available to him, he doesn't have 6 legitimate top 6 players. There is no doubt that he is trying to win now. He's trying to win every game.

Outside of a 1st rd pick those other draft picks are years away from helping the current coach.

He has no long term view at all. He thinks ZM's hustle and making himself look busy > skill players. Damn right it is purposeful.

So if you are rebuilding why would you hire a coach of Torst ilk?

Bill you need to take a step back and actually look at what this team has been over the last 10 years
