I was at the game last night with my son. We made a wish list of all things that would be cool to have happen before the game. The game didn't disappoint.
1. Pens win a close game
2. Hossa number retired
3. Malkin's 1,000 game
4. Crosby Score his 1st Chicago Goal
5. Get a warm-up puck

Got everything off our list. Amazing night

Congrats! That's awesome. Who did you get the puck from?

Geno with a goal and Sid with the game winner and 4pts. That's about as good as it gets for Pens fans.

Too bad Hossa chose another path. Him and Sid would have put up some really sick numbers.

Maybe because in a "think outside the box" way, the Pens were responsible for him ending up in Chicago.

He really wanted a Cup. Traded to us and we lost in the Finals. Said F' us and our long term contract to sign for a year with the team that beat us. We beat them and he said F' Detroit to sign with Chicago. If we had won in "08 or lost in '09 he may have stayed a Pen or a Wing.

Detroit didn't have the money to pay him with the salary cap taking effect, as they had Franzen next in line to get a big contract extension. He wanted to stay in Detroit, but wanted a long term deal. If there was no salary cap to deal with, he stays there. That's often brought up on our board when we talk about the salary cap shortening the Hawks' window, that they wouldn't have had him in the first place if there was no cap.

Also, Hossa often credited his year in Detroit for raising his game to the next level.

Now why would you think it’s a good idea to post facts on the internet?

Detroit could have taken the $3.9M for Franzen and given it to Hossa. He signed in Chicago for $5.275M, not sure how tight they were to the cap to take on the extra $1.3M.

Hossa was one of my favorite wingers during the Crosby years. I think Jake is probably a better winger for Crosby, but I loved Hossa's combo of hockey IQ and talent.

No idea what that would've meant for the Penguins salary cap wise. If I recall, we wanted to sign him to a $7M/deal. Staal would've been a casualty, I think Malkin would've been fine. A fun "what-if" in Penguins history.

It was Franzen's turn for the extension is what I remember. Hossa was not going to cut in line as the new guy. He probably would have had to wait for Lidstrom to retire before he got paid. Lidstrom had to cut back on his salary towards the end, also, in order to give the team a little more money to work with.

So they were going to keep a less talented player because it was "his turn?" That seems very loyal, and very dumb.

1. Yes Holland is very dumb and loyal

2. Franzen led the 2008 playoffs in goals and in 2009 is he was 3rd behind Geno and Sid. Let’s not act like Franzen wasn’t a beast.

Franzen was definitely a beast. What a stacked roster they had back then haha...almost as stacked as 2002...
