Good game. They have been playing well. Perhaps the hockey Gods will begin to reward them!
- spatso

As I've said a few times they've been playing well enough that if not for absolutely terrible puck luck their record would be quite a bit better.

This was a sloppy game but Sanderson looked good for the most part and Forsberg made the saves he needed to make. Good team effort.

Is there a silver lining?

Injury to Zub and Chabot has allowed Sanderson to blossom before our eyes. Can he keep it up? Could the defensive corps be okay (as is) with the return of Zub and Chabot? I think I would still like to see Sens add a big body with an ugly disposition on back end.

Is anything a priority right now?

I think I would like to see the Sens add a 2nd line centre.

Brady is pushing top 10 in scoring. Timmy is running a point a game. Giroux, DeBrincat, Batherson and Pinto have started the season with nice numbers.

Other than for the win/loss ratio, I am pretty happy with this team.

Is there anybody else out there that likes this team?

No matter how you feel about Travis Hamonic's game, good or bad, his acquisition last season was worthwhile just based on the way Jake Sanderson feels about playing with him. Sanderson shoehorns his appreciation for Hamonic into almost every media conversation.

Was not aware of this. Maybe the D is in better shape than I first thought.

Goaltending last night was NHL quality and more!

Good share spats. I did not mind the acquisition when it happened, even if the price was higher than it perhaps should have been. I still feel Hamonic is a useful player and if he's a positive influence on Sanderson, power to it.

It's a fair addition, but more is needed - especially with Chabot not being himself this year and Zub injury. This team's defense is a combination of underperforming vets and underdeveloped youngsters

I agree that some muscle on the back end would be good but I'd be more focused on adding a top six winger. I know a lot of people like DeBrincat but I'm not one of them and certainly not at the 9 million he will cost next year.

Giroux can play center for three years and Norris will be back eventually but going forward I don't see anybody in the system who can be relied upon to play top six with them. There's Tkachuk, Stutzle, Norris, Batherson, Giroux but then there's a hole.

People talk Greig but I don't know that his style of game will translate well into the NHL because of his size. He'll be much better than Kelly or Motte but that's about it.

Tyler Boucher may turn out to be a good bottom six guy and I think there's a good chance that he will but still bottom six.

I like Kastelec and Watson but Watson won't be around too much longer.

Love Sanderson and with Chabot they have two top pairing guys. Too bad they both play on the left side but that can also be an advantage when other teams are trying to match up.

Zub works for me on the right side but I can't understand why he has not already been extended and Dorion makes me nervous.

I think JBD is a great partner for Chabot.

Thomson and Kleven are coming and maybe Kleven will be the muscle you're talking about.

I want to see how Sanderson will do against better teams. I hope he does well but I sure hope Chabot gets back soon because I don't want to see Sanderson get smoked.

Anyway this is a good team and they're just going to get better. Looking forward to the NJD game.

9 D-men suited up for Sens this season. Combined have 29 points. Pretty good

Erik Karlsson has 26 points so far! End of 1st in DET

I wonder if the departure of Burns has had anything to do with Karlsson's improved play. It's going to make it easier for Grier to get rid of him and that contract that's for sure.

A+

I think DeBrincat is a far better fit than it might first appear. Early in the season he was snake bitten and failed to bury some great scoring chances. Lately he has been scoring key goals and should continue to improve over the rest of the season.

But this is a monster draft year and if the Sens are on the outside looking in when it comes to the trade deadline I could be convinced that DeBrincat's $9m salary might be better shared between Sanderson and Pinto. Also, I would not discount Pinto being the top 6 player missing from your analysis.

So what is the difference in the struggling start the Sens have had this year and the blistering pace set by the NJ Devils coming out of the gate? I think it comes down to nothing more than the Devils young roster being a year a year ahead of the Sens on the development curve.

The contract term is the killer. It is a very long time to the end of that deal when you take Karlsson's age and injury history into account. Even if San Jose took back a significant portion of contract for the entire duration it is still a huge cap addition for any contending team.

Only the Leafs, desperate to win a playoff round, might take on the risk. But, Leafs would need to shed the equivalent cap hit and I have no idea how they could make that happen.

And no matter what Grier does, Erik holds all the cards.
So all of this is massively speculative.

It's a beautiful place to live. The heat seems to be agreeing with his sore foot and he's playing up to that contract now.

Ya I think this is 100% bang on.

I would welcome him back but there would have to be significant $ taken back, and nothing significant given back - which is something SJ is looking for

+1

Maybe in four years at the end of his current contract, as a rental, to help win the Sens the cup?

A guy can dream.

100% agreed.

Funny how in the summer it would cost SJ a 1st AND salary renting for someone to take EK65.

Unless SJ was giving him away AND he really misses Ottawa, I wouldn't do that.

The more time passes the more I'm convinced that the Sens should address the top pair RD in the summer, via UFA route. And there are some good ones available (Dumba, Severson) that won't cost players or draft capital.

JBD hasn't looked out of place and Slots to the. bottom pairing.

Just getting rid of Zaitsev has improved the team.

Makes me wonder what a simple move like getting rid of the coach would do...

I don't personally believe Karlsson would accept a trade to TOR, just based on legacy impacts alone if not his complete lack of desire to deal with the media circus there. I still resent Spezza for his BS move when he signed there as a fan (this was my dream team, I'd take min salary to be here forever comments).

Bold prediction: Ottawa wins tomorrow 5-2 with an empty-net goal.

Stutzle has a breakout game and Tkachuk with 2 points.

Fans are so keen for this team to succeed. So much pent up enthusiasm wanting to break loose.

Strange part about what is happening is that the circumstances are almost perfect for new ownership coming onto the scene. Everyone wants to buy a team that is on its way up...but still falling short.

Interesting to speculate on ideas starting with the thought, if I was the new owner of the Sens I would.............

I saw that you posted something earlier in the comments about how incoming ownership will have to be consulted with if a coaching or GM change was to be made. When there are 5-6 groups on record as having interest, nobody is asking a potential group if they think the coach should be fired. In fact, whoever approved all the stuff from the summer are the ones that would approve any hiring or firing. In 30 years of watching pro sports I've never heard of a GM asking a potential group buying a team if he could fire a coach. No group has any say on any decision until the board of governors approve a sale, it's like this in all 4 major pro sports.

The Devils have to lose at some point but I hate betting against a team on any streak in pro sports. If it was going to happen, it sure helps having an afternoon when players routines are out the window.

Friedman believes the Senators and Sharks have talked about it. However, he thinks the Senators would lack sufficient long-term cap space to acquire Karlsson even if the Sharks retain 50 percent of his $11.5 million average annual value. That's because they have Alex DeBrincat, Artem Zub and Shane Pinto to re-sign.

Eliot forgot to include Sanderson on the list of players needing to be signed.
