Maybe this has been answered before, but how will the Hawks reach the floor next year with Kane and Toews off the books? Sign a bunch of overpriced vets or take contracts off hands? Seriously that's a lot of cap space.

See my post about 5 before yours for my two cents. I agree with the bolded above.

Might as well call up Mitchell. Regula looked shaky tonight, he can be sent down, or better yet waive C. Jones.
- boilermaker100

Depends on what the long goals are for Vlasic. Jones can lead the tank platoon this season. Mitchell will need a little time to get back into hockey shape.

I think Mitchell will be up before long.

So it took 16 games, longer than I thought. Some say they are on board with the tank, until the team plays to their potential (competitive with the other bottom teams in the league but no match for the top). Then the knives come out why the Hawks are not Stanley Cup contenders right now.

Yeah. Enjoy the fact they don't quit but I am sure what some are expecting when they are guys like Khaira, Entwistle and Caleb Jones are on the PP.

When Jarred Tinordi is one of your better D-man, you are going to win very much. Nothing against Tinordi cause for a guy picked up on waivers he has done what one can expect from him.

Not sure what some are expecting either, they have maybe five NHL forwards, maybe. Their defense is playing halfway decent with the exception of #82, and the goalies have come to play most games. IMHO, Luke Richardson and crew have done a nice job with this team. I’d like for them to lose games that are watchable, unlike the last two games.

For how long is this tank, anyway?

Apparently for at least five years.

One more comment on Hawks defense. Tinordi has looked decent, he’s been playing with Murphy, your defensive partner makes a diffefence. Regula was #82’s partner, the poor guy has been demoted. I don’t know if Regula will one day be a regular at the NHL level, but the Hawks did not do him any favors pairing him up with C Jones.

They are 32 in goals for per game and 31 in shots against per game. This is a nice job?

One thing is for sure they miss Seth Jones, everywhere

Finishing greater than dead last would be a hell of a coaching job with these players.

This is the plan. Have you looked at the roster he is coaching? Tell us who you think could get more out of this collection of 4th line players?

Hardly. His brother is doing just as well of a job fishing pucks out of the net as Seth. Seth can return to his normal duties when he comes back. Hopefully next season.

No one can look good next to Caleb. He is all over the place and it makes it tough on his partner to try to cover for his roaming. He makes Gus look like prime Hammer.

Capfriendly has them at $40M next year with 11 players signed. Floor will be around 62M. Sign a couple of Domi types for 3M, take on a bad contract or two for 6-8M and fill out the roster with your 1M guys.
- boilermaker100

I was thinking for this deadline, if AA and Domi, along with Toews and Kane are all moved. It could mean having to retain salary and/or taking back expiring contracts or LTIR situations. The more they can accommodate other teams salary wise, the more they should get in the return, in theory, anyway.

Since you mention next summer, will they move Mrazek then or at the next deadline? I mean given that the goalie depth is better than expected thus far. And the number of contracts that expire in 2024, wow. It's what you want when doing a rebuild, to be sure, and I can't even begin to speculate on what they do nearer term or medium term. We're all going to be pulling our hair out while sitting in our armchairs trying to figure it out.

You have hair left to pull out? Lucky bastard.

I think I’m most interested in seeing how long Kane and Toews go until they are just fed up with the losing and ask out. As much as I’m sure he would like to be the all-time Hawk leader in points, I just think he works too hard to toil on a team with no shot.

Steve, they don’t have many NHL forwards, therefore they don’t score a lot of goals, we knew that would be the case coming into the season. The Hawks as of last night were 8th in the league in save percentage and 15th in GAA, so just maybe those shots are coming from the outside, which means the defense is doing a decent job, and of course, so are the goalies. So yeah, the coaching staff has done a nice job up to now with the talent available. They play the Bruins, the Penguins, and Dallas next, they’ll be in last place by Thanksgiving, which is what most of us expected. I hope they stay in games and are watchable, that’s all we can ask for this season.

Not expecting Contender at this point but I would feel better if there was a Management team with rebuidling experience and a Coach who was coaching as if his life depended on it.
- stevefrmglencoe

We just had Bowman managing like his job depended on it rather than for the benefit of the future of the team and the same with JC. No patience to let things evolve. Richardson so far seems like the real deal. Poker face with a not so good hand. As far as KD, we'll see. Need to have the patience to let things evolve.

Now why they had to double down on another knucklehead from the Cubs I don't know, but it's on me to have an open mind. We won't know if the plan will work for quite a while.

I know I am a minority of 1 in Chicago. I was looking forward to seeing Bowman build a team post Kane and Toews. With $45 million of Cap space, he would have put together a team that scored 400 goals. Might have given up 401.

As for JC, very aggresive style. Covid didn't help him. Real big shoes to fill. He will be back in the NHL eventually.

What is with all the concern about Greenberg? The guy is an IT/Operations manager. Just recently, Richardson wanted to see data on blue line turnovers. Greenberg was the guy who got him that info. What is the cause for concern? That he’s from the Cubs?

Well, he started to do that, and then he lost his poop and traded / signed Jones, and Fleury and T Johnson. I think most can agree it was time for him to go.

Obviously that is the plan at the GM level but at ice level we should expect NHL coaches and players to do things at an NHL level.
- stevefrmglencoe

As with other teams in the past going through a rebuild. Players on the ice are not necessarily themselves at the nhl level.

So Mitchell recalled just in time to hop on the plane to Baahston. Hopefully he dresses for the game and Caleb sits with Mitchell playing on the PP.

Kaner's birthday tomorrow. He'll reach the ripe old age of 34. Maybe he'll celebrate by getting a couple of goals against the Bruins. Maybe not.
