5 years of top 5 picks. 2-1oa 2-2oa Not even possible anymore because you aren't allowed to win that many lotto picks.

Technically it is, just need SUPER lotto luck. Teams can only move up 10 spots now I believe? So as long as both lotteries are won by teams in the 12-16 range, the worst team can keep 1oa without winning the lottery

Also annoying how people associate rebuild with the need to draft top 3, it's nice to do be able to draft that high, but it doesn't mean your rebuild year is meaningless if you draft 5th overall instead. it's about making trades/signings with a long-term vision in mind, not just losing hockey games. Plus at this point, it's just a reset button this organization needs because this current core group of players are losers.

You are right. That would be super luck. They could win twice and have 3 other draws where at least 1 or both teams win outside of the top 11 spots.

Pretty much. They seem to like his team too since they've decided to build around it

I get that.

I'm talking about a single year, as in if you have a multi-year rebuild, let's say you finish 4th-last in standing but end up picking 5th or 6th during one of the seasons, that's not the end of the world during a 3-4 year period of being a bottom dweller, chances are that you'll end up with 1 or 2 years of picking top 3.

But the ideal time to do this was 7 or 8 seasons ago, now we're in a spot where ownership and casual fans are attached to this core of losers so we're stuck in no-man's land.

It's pointless to even discuss a full blow it up rebuild, too hard to move around that much money and ownership doesn't want to blow it up even if they could.

It's only the end of the world if prospects don't pan out. Like Juolevi with his injuries. Took his skating from an asset to a liability.

I find Drance too dramatic, but for all the hate he gets, he did end up right over the slurpers in the media who kept telling fans to stop freaking out and wait and see over the past 8 seasons.

When your main stance over that time period was "this organization is dumb and doing things the wrong way" then you get a higher horse to ride than the fanboys or even the fence sitters who finally caved in during the 2nd half of Benning's tenure.

Yup

Even then, what are people afraid of? Losing?

Oh..you mean like this team has been doing over the past 8 seasons anyway?

I still think it truly sucks that Juolevi had those bad injuries. Kid had some real potential.

Yeah, like you said his skating went from a strength to a weakness which is massive for a hockey player. I think his pucks skills and hockey sense are fine, if he stayed healthy he still wouldn't be more valuable than Tkachuk but I don't think he would've been a flat out bust either.

Injuries are an overlooked part of why some guys peak at a younger age or bust as prospects.

It isn't just the casual fans, some are lifelong fans that have played at a fairly high level of hockey.

This 100%, but I also don't think he would be bailing on the team as soon as he could either...

I don't read his stuff for a few reasons.

When management tells the owner we need to do this, and the owner says like fu@k you are going to do that then this is what you get.

The owner is not going to walk away from making boatloads of money.

If Mike Gillis was an idiot, the most successful GM in the organizations history, then every GM in Canucks history is an idiot.

That said, I understand Gillis was crappy at important parts of the GM job and he inherited the core, but, if he’s an idiot then I don’t know what you’d call Benning?

Truth be told, the current management group looks to have had some faith the team could replicate the second half of last season. It’s abundantly clear that isn’t the case, changes need to be made.

That’s an example of the wrong draft pick. We can make that debate on the next set of high draft picks gone wrong after the blow up.

Benning was supposed to build a new core through the draft. Building the rest of the team through free agency and trades he failed at. Allvin hasn't done any better.

One reason why you don't really build an entire team through the draft is because of BPA and uncertainty of prospects.

Brackett said once in a while team needs meet BPA and it's a win.

This team could get rid of some/most of the core and I think a lot of fans would be perfectly ok with it until management does the same thing they have been doing.

I was very happy when they traded away Hamonic for a 3rd. Not happy when they traded that 3rd for a bum.

There is no difference from Luongo's 12-year contract and Millers 7 year. Both handcuff the team.

Keith Ballard for Bernier a first and Grabner (then bought out by the same GM.) is just as bad as Mcann and a first for Gudbrandson.

This discussion should end with all three of the last GMs were all idiots.

Agreed.
I see the big problem being, where the fuck do you start?
The team badly needs to move players out, some of whom may need an asset attached to them, some may need salary retention or a bad contract attached to them, while others are not an upgrade to what other teams already have.
Theanagement needs to be of the mindset of, take what you can get, when you can get it, instead of overvalued the teams players, like many of the fans tend to do.
