Sabres went punch for punch with the best team in the conference.
This team is definitely different from years past, this 11 game sample size of good underlyings is something I think is sustainable more than the blind luck of past years.
Time will tell if it’s a playoff team, a night like this is where you need your special teams to come through.
Should at least be playing for something deep into the year though.

It’s tough to play vs the top teams with half of you d named Clague, pilut or Fitzgerald

The underlyings say they are about a .500 team. 49.9% xGF. Most of the numbers are balanced right around the 50% mark. Young team, certainly things to be optimistic about.

Gotta get better on the dot, hard to win games when you can't win a faceoff |

That was always going to be a problem for them.

Samuelsson and Lybushkin were definitely missed.
To be fair to Carolina, they also played on the back half of a back to back after a big game in Tampa the night before.

It's not. They are still way too thin up front. |

This game was a classic case of one team being in a different echelon than the other. I live in Charlotte, so I have seen a lot of their young talent play here in the AHL (Checkers, .. who also won the Calder Cup), and it was/ is clear that their ascent to the top of the NHL is the model on how to rebuild.
Buffalo is doing it now, and it's exciting. There were certainly many glaring errors tonight (faceoffs, not moving feet, lack of energy), but those can be worked on. Missing multiple D men against Carolina must be a pre-requisite when we play them, OYE VEY !!!
I'm not upset about the loss tonight, .. it was expected, but part of me was hopeful that the jump they had against Pitt was going to carry over, and they would maybe punch the Canes in the mouth. C'est L"vie !
The next game is a divisional game against an opponent who does not respect us, and the boys need to step up to the challenge, .. being a good road team is a sign that you are on your way to, or already considered a contender. Win against Tampa and it's a .500 roadie against two of the best in the NHL, and you got the juice flowing for what should be two games at home that are rocking (Vegas & Boston).
Even '05-06 had some hiccups along the way, .. how does THIS TEAM respond to adversity in writing their story. |

Yeah, overall pretty entertaining game. Third was probably frustrating though as the Canes went into lockdown mode.
Having the Staal line really gives them an element that's tough to match because they just get it deep and spend the rest of the shift grinding away in the offensive zone.
They use that forecheck as a defensive weapon. Opponent can't score if the puck is in their end. |

You would think by now they would get prepared to beat Carolina. These phux beat them out of a Stanley Cup that they easily would have won against the Oilers. But no, they do not even get fired up for the game and play hard. Now they will lose to Tampa, Montreal, St. Louis, Boston, etc. I hope they prove me wrong. We shall see. |
