The requirment to stay in Ottawa is intersting. Is this only to assure a nervous fanbase that they intend to keep the team here, or did some groups hope to move the team elsewehre?

We know the league / Bettman seemed intent on the team remaining in Ottawa.

Folks who know how to make money...know hew to make money. The LeBreton lands in on the site of former logging operations and the soil is in need of remediation. In the last go round the NCC offered to pay upwards of $200m for the remediation. I believe one of the partners on the failed attempt last time was a company that specializes in remediation.

The Ottawa business community is so ready for this that we might be shocked by how quickly it moves and how deeply the business community comes on as huge Sens supporters.

The market means something, it's far enough to be outside Montreal and Toronto's profit regions, it creates more local rivalry, it's the nation's capital, and the arena deal could transform the team. There's a lot going for this city despite sub-par numbers and middling on-ice product. I'm not surprised by the condition, I suspect Bettman is on board, as are the girls who want to honour their father's legacy to this city, checkered as the past may be. I really wanted the Melnyk girls to keep running it themselves, but Ryan Reynolds as a minority owner would be pretty cool.

Happy to see that I'm not alone and unfortunately for me it didn't even feel good emotionally.

I'm OK with the Stutzle deal because I think he'll grow into the contract but the Norris signing was questionable for the very reason you cite.

Giroux was never intended to be traded but rather to serve as a mentor for 3 years and I think he'll do that well enough for now at least.

Everybody knew that the D was not up to scratch but I thought they needed to find out what they had in JBD and Thomson before making any significant trades. There was and is no rush because this team is too young to be a serious contender and all that any of the trades people were proposing would accomplish would be to squander assets in exchange for poorer odds at the lottery. That's all Smith accomplished in the last couple of years by playing Chabot into the ground with mostly lousy partners not only stunting his development but making sure the team didn't have guys like Mason McTavish in the system. How that guy is still here is beyond me.

Everybody knows what I think about the DeBrincat acquisition. It was a brilliant marketing move for Ottawa this summer but no serious Cup contender is going to have DeBrincat on the team let alone in the top six. 9 million bucks to qualify!!! YIKES!!! Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Pierre "Proudest Day of My Life" Dorion does it and gobs of people cheer.
