He's 20 in about 5 weeks. And is playing in his 5th year in the dub. He is very much a overager.

He's not an overager and this is his 4th year. He played 3 games as a 15 year old but was not eligible to play that season because he was too young. This is his 19 year old season and next season, if he plays will be his overage season. He's actually still eligible to play in the world junior...overagers can't play in that tournament.

You're just arguing semantics. He's a man playing against boys and the CHL scoring leaders are always filled with 19-20-year-olds who were mid-round draft picks that usually don't turn into anything. Look at the guy leading the Quebec league. Same age as Ciona, wasn't even drafted. Last year, Kerins was second in OHL scoring. Do most Flames fans even know that? Arshdeep Bains won the WHL scoring title. What's his NHL trajectory look like? Joshua Roy won the QMHJL scoring title as a 5th-round pick and most people don't think he has what it takes to compete at an NHL level.

Anything can happen but chances are Ciona is most likely going to turn into a career AHLer. Most of the other 19-20 year olds playing junior aren't pro caliber players.

I think you’re missing the point here. Ciona is a good pick for the 6th round. Could be a career AHLer, but still Flames keep drafting well in the later rounds. Whether he’s 17: 18, etc doesn’t matter. The fact the Flames think he’s good enough to warrant a contract is all that matters.

You’re all missing the point. The guys never going to be a regular. Just a bunch of arguing for nothing.

Exactly, he's a good prospect and he'll get a chance to move to the next level..Likely the Ahl. Who knows after that but what I like about him is he's obviously got his fitness to a much higher level. That's a big part of being a pro. The flames obviously have a plan to turn him pro next year rather than see him go back to junior for another year.

I get your point but it's not semantics. It's better if your prospect dominates when he's 19 rather than his 20 year old year. Not saying he's going to make the NHL, he's just a better prospect this year than he was last year. Signing a contract is a milestone and we'll see where he ends up.
