He needs to get more PP time if he wants to get to 40pts in my opinion.
- mickel25

In my opinion, Frost has some of the same problems that plague Ghost. The skill set he has would be best served playing at the top end of the lineup in their respective positions. But Ghost was at best marginal top 4 material. And Frost might be at best marginal top 6 material.

Once you fall out of that range, coaches prioritize dependability over creativity, and being streakily good but often underachieving will mean your NHL career may end up being a bit of a struggle, and your spot in the line up always in doubt

Well, except for the fact that MBFF did not say a word about Cates. I thought his observation was about Frost in and of itself.

But is he really?

He has 1 point in 6 games, which came in game 3. In the 3 games since he has no points and is -1.

Yes technically 1 point in 6 games averages out to a 14 point pace, but take out that game 3 he has zero points.

He will be lucky to reach 30 points in my opinion.

We have to start to understand that N Cates is a #137 pick and if he became a 40 point player that would place him as one of the best #137 picks ever.

There was/is a reason he slipped that low. And we are seeing that now in his play. He has some skill but he also has weaknesses that IMO are always going to prevent him from being anything more than a 3rd or 4th line player.

love the frostsky apologist.

Cates learning to play center at the NHL level on the fly. Frostsky is not. So shocking he has a whopping 2 more points than Cates. That is really amazing what Frostsky has accomplished.

if you visit other flyer sites they think he is a god and legit top end player. they blame the flyers for sabotaging and ruining his career so far. no onus on the player at all

many mock lineups had him top lien center or 2nd. pure entertainment.

I see. So is Frostky = Frost + Gretzky?

no and 1st round picks aren't always a sure thing. but most of the time they should be nhl players. I think a lot of people are just frustrated with the amount we have missed on. and maybe we were spoiled.....for years our pick in the 20's...we go players like richie, claude etc...

MacEwen just played 17. I think Torts could go 20 with him.

The serious answer would be to not have Cates killing penalties AND be one of the top minutes guys on the PP. And boost Tanner's role. That would get Cates to the 15-17 min range, which would be more appropriate for his current level of play.

I was only saying play Cates a bit less, not move him out of the middle.

But it looks like Torts is going in that direction now.

Cates has nowhere near the level of expectations as Frost has. I thought the entire point of MBFF's post was to point out that those expectations may be ... statistically unrealistic.

Guy goes from waiver exile to setting career highs in TOI.

Hell of a reversal of fortune. When Torts loves you, he loves you.

There certainly is a lot of opportunities for non-established players on the Flyers thus far, I hope some step up, grab those chances and takeoff.

Zamula, Sandstrom, all those forwards…

He really needs to learn how to play a complete 200 ft game before he even thinks about using offensive creativity in the NHL

Tortorella’s “volatile, confrontational style” was criticized by former players who claimed he “chastised players in the middle of the dressing room or even on the bench during games, and there were times the confrontations were uncomfortable. They left the rink angry with him on occasion, and they often disagreed with his coaching decisions and/or his approach.”

boo hoo

Also lost out on many other first and second round picks under the last two genius GMs. That's the problem.
