how 'bout Monahan?

he isn't that old, and he's looking pretty decent so far, perhaps Hughes could put him on a good deal.

- Pat1993

I am fine with whatever they do..

Like I said, just care about the kids progression this year, not gonna get worked up about others who may/may not be here next year (except the obvious 3 that need to go now).

If Monahan gets us another another first round pick, that does not stop the Habs from resigning him in the off-season...

Could they buy him out (like Alzner)?
- Garfield512

yup.

according to capfriendly, a Mike Hoffman buyout spans 2 years, has a cost of $3,333,333 and savings of $1,666,667.

Habs are not winning in the next 3 years, so they do not need Monahan 4 years from now, as much as they could use a 1st round pick.

I get what you're saying, but three years?

looking at this group, they don't seem that far way either.

but I guess that impression all could change in 20 games from now lol

to be a real contender, 4-5 years, sure, but to start winning on a regular basis? unless they make horrible trades and their prospects all start sucking I don't think so.

Do you want to sign a guy with a deep joint injury history to a long-term contract but not need him for 2-3 years, hoping he does not deteriorate?

I'd rather take my chances with trading / signing someone when the time comes to add to the core, down the line.

imo it will take 3 years just to sniff the playoffs, not being a contender. a bit like the Sens this year.

I get that, but having a guy like him with the current young players they have isn't a bad thing though either, even if he isn't there anymore when they actually contend.

That's the way I see it too ... there are a lot of good teams in the East we have to go through. It will be a while.

On offense, we have a good first line but not much after that.

that's the time the dcore will need to become a good one. they're not all like Guhle... Barron, Mailloux, Xhekaj... give them a few years. then that team will be much better.

yeah, sure.

anyway so far I'm not disappointed by this season, the games are actually interesting and entertaining to watch, so I can't complain

kinda like the sign-and-trade, although I think that was Ek's classic go-to.

Still would rather have another 1st round pick, with maybe (if he still fits) signing him in the off-season over Monahan for 5+ years and no first round pick.

Agreed, even when losing it's fun watching the youngins' play ... sure beats watching a bunch of overpaid over-the-hill vets packing it in every night.

At least with the kids there's hope we'll see the end of the tunnel one day.

I don't think they'd have to put him on a 5-year deal.
