Haven't had much of a chance to watch preseason.

Who's your standouts, good or bad?

- gravyface

Willie’s been the best Leaf by a long shot. The goalies have been good. More depth/better bottom six. Nickie pushing hard. Malgin playing well. Cliffy and Simmonds probably on their way out.

Since the Jays have had my attention, havent been following Hockey much. When is the first real game?

also, it would be nice to see one of my Toronto teams do something..this time.
Leafs or Jays, please get to the finals so I can be happy once every 30 years

I think they’d worry about the defense they’d get from JT, Willie and Little Nickie or the Malgun. Maybe Jarnrok slides up there and they use Willie on a third line. (I don’t think they’ve tried that yet though.)

I think he'll just use them situationally. More OZ for JT/Willie. Lots of good DZ options with lines 1, 3 and a real line 4 this year.

Because they can sell out the ACC while charging full price to watch a team made up of Marlies and some vets who never take it out of 2nd gear for the entire meaningless game.

So from what I can figure, the plan is to go into the season with 13 forwards (Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Kerfoot, Engvall, Jarnkrok, Kampf, Aube-Kubel, Bunting, Aston-Reese, Robertson and Malgin) and 6 D (Rielly, Muzzin, Brodie, Holl, Sandin and Giordano) with Liljegren injured.

Including Murray and Samsonov, that leaves them technically $2.18m over the cap. Even with Liljegren on LTIR, they're still a Nick Robertson away from being cap compliant; I don't see how he makes the opening night roster.

Has anyone gotten any clarity into that?

My guess is that because he can go up and down with impunity, he's going to have to start with the Marlies - but barring a trade, we still have no flexibility. It still feels very much like Dubas needs to do something.

I mean if they don't sign Aston-Reese, the salary difference in there is negligible.

How much time will Tavares miss? Maybe putting him on LTIR, (if they can depending on his injury) that should buy them some time to make a move or three

That's the thing. Apparently Engvall is skating up in Gravenhurst on a line, and Keefe hasn't ruled out Tavares for the start of the year; if he's not out for at least 24 days or 10 games, he is not eligible for LTIR - I don't think he's that injured. The only guy, I think, that starts on actual LTIR is Liljegren.

There's an article in the Athletic projecting the Leafs opening night lineup (which is basically what I have above - which was basically just gleaned from the grey sweater players), but it doesn't address how that lineup could be cap complaint. Perhaps they are assuming that JT is starting on LTIR - in which case he's in worse territory than Keefe is letting on, because the earliest return date for anyone starting the season on LTIR is November 2nd (for Toronto - our 11th game).

From what I've read, Tavares could be available for opening night or might need a few days.. Whatever happens, I agree with you, there has to be a move made.. I hope it's not just waiving players... If Robertson wins a spot on the roster, I suppose they could move Kerfoot

My math is the same. I don't know exactly how the "I.R. and emergency call up" rules work with the Cap but maybe they send him down and put JT on IR for a game or two and can call NR (or anybody else) up on an emergency basis so that they can dress 20?

So effectively Malgin gets the gig and NR gets to be the emergency call up for JT. Once JT's back NR or Malgin gets sent down ...subject to more injuries.

I still don't think they can play this tight to the Cap for long. Ultimately they need to move a decent sized contract unless a big ticket goes on LTIR.

And Tim Horton's.

Hockey Canada is dead.

The only people who don't know it yet work for Hockey Canada.

And you know what? Frank them.

I didn't think I could get any more pissed off at them after I found out they had two (TWO!) separate slush funds - funded from minor hockey registrations like the ones I have been paying for my daughters. Yes, that's a particularly jarring little bit of irony - my girls are in organized sports to raise their self-esteem and make them more confident - yet the money is going to protect rapists.

But no, Hockey Canada refused to stop digging. Interim Chair Andrea Skinner stated that they shouldn't remove the current Hockey Canada leaders, because, "Will the lights stay on in the rink? We can't predict that, and to me that's not a risk worth taking."

Hey Andrea - go frank yourself.

Do you want to know how those lights get turned on?

By the thousands of hockey parents like me who have volunteered their time (at considerable expense) to make sure that kids across Canada have been able to participate in minor hockey.

And our money - when it isn't going to covering up sexual assaults - pays the arenas who turn on the lights.

Frank you, Andrea Skinner, you arrogant P.O.S.

I seem to recall that a few years ago, we were able to retroactively put a player on LTIR through training camp, so they didn't have to start the LTIR clock at the start of the season.

Is this ringing bells for anyone?

So how's everyone's day going?

This morning I got a rush request - "Hey Wedgie, we need you to do X by Tuesday at noon - so this poop job is hanging over your head all holiday weekend."

"Oh great, thanks. To get this done, I need to know about A, B, C and D. Then I'll get started."

"Oh, we don't know A, B, C, D yet."

"When will we know?"

"Not until the end of November, at the earliest."

It should always be the Habs. Always.

But OK, we play them the night before, so it has to be somebody else. Fine.

But FFS, make it an Original Six team, or Vancouver, or Ottawa, or Buffalo, or Philly.

Those are the teams that make the building electric.
