I’d rather he figure out how to break the 30 goal barrier before learning how to break faces.

He will. He’s going to have a good season. He better

Have to agree chief. We are not suppose to talk about more talent needed on the Islanders though.

If Barzal gets more ice time and gets scoring wingers...he can be the guy who deserves this money

Or he can be the guy that gets it done and deserves it without an all star line. That remains to be seen.

A little higher than projected?? How about a massive overpayment. Numbers don't always tell the story but in this case it does

This is a bit of an exaggeration. What do you think his contract should have been?

My guess is you are a troll, but I am curious to what you think he is worth. He has won the fastest skater in the league, he was fantastic on Team Canada, He is by far the best player on the Isles and as the 1C has taken them to the ECF twice .. which is a lot further than teams paying their 1C a LOT more has gotten.... He did this with Leo Komarov on his wing... and he is 25. So what do you think He's worth?

(I can't wait to see the $5 mill a year tops idiotic reply).

No question the taxes are an issue with NY but it has never stopped the Rangers from signing top players. If the Rangers had problems signing players as well I can see the Tax argument more. The Jets have also not done a lot of winning in the last number of years and that does not help as well.

I thought I said it yesterday, but in a perfect world I'd say around $8.5M-ish would have been "fair".

So it's marginally higher than maybe it would have been ideally, but that "fair" price doesn't really take into account market effects like Barzal clearly being our best forward and having some leverage and the fact that he'd be a UFA next year and really have Lou's balls in a vice.

It's a good deal. Not amazing, not bad. Just a solid "good", in my opinion. I'm not going to stress over $650k on a star's contract

I was hoping for a million less. Maybe that was unrealistic with his current contract but I thought this past season would at least give Lou a little leverage. Broke 80 points once, inconsistent defensive play, I thought would all be factors in the negotiation. But saying you want to finish your career and want to win here are huge selling points especially for this club. I think he’ll live up to his contract I just am more of a you should get paid for what you accomplished and not what you may kind of person.

His career average PPG comes out to .86, which is about 71pts over a full 82gm season. That puts him at about the same production Zibanejad posted in recent years at the time he signed his current ($8.5M) contract, similar to Backstrom ($9.2M) when he signed his current deal in Jan 2020.

Those are the two best comparables, in terms of recent signings and PPG totals.

He honestly just has too much leverage to sign much cheaper than he did. If he walked after next year they would be (frank)ed.

Yeah 100% but I think you’re forgetting about Koivula who looks ready to take the reigns as our next 1st line center.

Barzal got extra money having to play on the same line as Leo.

Right or wrong, Barzal's numbers have been hurt playing in a much more defensive system and Barzal does not have the same quality of wings as other centers.

Someone on the NHL on siriusXM brought up a very valid point with Bazal. He put up 90 points with no regard for defense responsibilities. Lou comes in, brings in a tough defensive coach in Trotz and forces Barzal to re-learn his game and play 200 feet. The kid does that, goes twice to the ECF.
You can't then bring the kid to negotiating table and hold that against him and say "we forced you to change and play our system and sacrifice offense for it, therefore we are not going to pay you."

That's just the way the league has been for a while. If a GM wants to land or retain talent he has to make an offer that can seem like an over payment.

All very valid points.. one thing of note though on his rookie season. He was not the 1C so he didn't get the "shut down line" or top line of everyone we were facing.

Sonny Milano and Cody Eakin have been released from their PTO's, per the #Flames.

Nobody wants Sonny Milano

I'd sign him and stick him in Bridgeport

No, he had considerably less pressure with Tavares drawing all the tough assignments for sure
