I don't know if this is a verboten hot button issue or not, but I sincerely can't fathom why Hockey Canada is so insistent on keeping this executive board. It makes no sense. Scott Smith has been a senior executive through all of this - being a VP from 1996 - 2012, and then president from 2013 onwards until he was named CEO 3 months ago - despite all of the known history. It's legitimately stunning in terms of poor judgement or a lack of awareness of what the public feels.

I had pencilled Gaudette in for 4th line C, but I'll fully admit he hasn't impressed in preseason play. I looked as his underlying numbers, and they are surprisingly positive, but I've got to attribute that to his linemates, because from what I thought I was seeing, he looked often disengaged or too far off the puck . . .

Good news was Hockey Quebec saying adieu to Hockey Canada today. They went full Rene Levesque. Other provincial federations need to step up.

The entire Canadian hockey system is franking bizarre, but we are not allowed to question it.

We send 15-year-olds to live with families they have never met, so that they can play hockey for for-profit companies, yet the kids aren't allowed to be paid (yeah, I know, scholarship money!).

We win WJCs, so the system cannot be touched.
