It's not amazing, imo. Eventually reality overcame hope and the thought process adapted to the reality.
- Scoob

If it takes 80 games or so for a thought process to adapt to a reality, the thought process is severely lacking.

So you needed over 70 games to figure out Risto was a bum? You know the goods!!
- ClaudeFather

I never stated Risto was a bum, in fact I stated the opposite, that he is better player than some people give him credit for. Ok, well maybe on the PK Risto is a bum. My issue is not so much with Risto, its in his resigning for about $25M. I didn't mind the trade and the aggressiveness, and as I mentioned the first few months of the season I thought Risto played well overall. But as the season went on he got worse, as BTW did most of the Flyers players which given the season they were having makes sense. Thus when I look at what Risto brings to the team and what Fletcher committed to him cap wise, it made no sense.

The Risto situation is utterly ridiculous. Anyone with eyes should have been able to tell that, over the course of nearly a full decade, he simply makes too many mistakes to be a good top 4 defenseman. This is also borne out by any and every stat you could care to look at. And yet somehow, the idiots running the Flyers convinced themselves he was worth paying a huge price for in trade assets and cap space because he would be "hard to play against".

It's one thing to be a very bad team that's rebuilding and adding net assets. It's unforgivable to a very bad team that's spending well over the cap and is missing its next two 2nd round picks.

Wow, they're also missing their 5th rounder in 2024 because for some reason Florida wouldn't do the Giroux trade without it.

You're right, I should just do what you do. The MJL flowchart:

Did Hextall draft, trade or sign the player?

YES - Player brought in by Hextall

The player is completely awesome! Is the player playing well?

YES - I told you so
NO - its the fault of the coaching staff and/or lack of talent around the player

NO - Player not obtained by Hextall

The player completely SUCKS! Is the player playing well?

YES - player is just riding coat tails of other players and player's actual advanced metrics are trash!
No - I told you so and you're an idiot for not listening to me.

Hmmm, yup .. this is what I am going to follow from now on ...

eh, hope springs eternal, and then there's hesitancy to admit one was incorrect, both of which take time to reckon with. Everyone deals with that. He ultimately stated that he was incorrect on this one so I see no reason for folks to pile on him over his initial thoughts.

If it was anyone else, sure. Not this guy. He fought tooth and nail all season that Risto was a good player, he never saw a difference but just went to the other side after all the laughing. And now makes snarky posts about the player which is absolutely absurd after a year of defending.

Ristolainen didn't get worse. He is and was the exact same player he was advertised to be. It didn't take 70 games to see it. It took 10 at the most. His decent games were few and far in between. Someone who knows the goods when he sees it does not need a full season to see it.

How can you say you don't like the re-signing and say you don't have an issue with the player? That doesn't add up.

This is not an isolated incident of flawed player evaluation. It is a repeated pattern.

Recently chastized another poster for "going down with the SS Risto". When that poster attempted to point out that Ristolainen was not the only player culpable on an individual play.

Again, I’m not gonna harp on Ristolainen as long as we have Hayes on this team.

Never said he’d be cooked? Think of it this way.

1) say sanheim gets 3/4 year deal coming up at around 6 mil….

2) he gets to that 28 year range WHATS the deal gonna be? Term? Salary? Do you sign a top 4 good dman to that 6/7/8 year deal at what?? 7/8/9 mil per?

3) on a hopefully extremely young team with some top end talent? Hopefully. Assuming they bottom out next few years?

4) those type deals puts you right back to where you were. Look at team now.

5) and that’s IF everything goes well. Throw in injuries plateaued play all that.

6) the move is to trade him now and gain assets. That’s how you rebuild

Hayes didn't cost a 1st and a 2nd, plus the 2nd they paid to get rid of Ghost, plus Hagg who was worth a 6th at the trade deadline.

Again no. Not on this team. This team of needs total rebuild he really doesn’t fit.

Even if you bottom out next say 3/4 years and draft some top end talent think 4 years ahead.

Would that team be ready to compete for cup? Nope. Highly unlikely. So what’s the point?

Sure you can keep hart what’s his next deal gonna be? You willing to pay that? Maximize the asset maybe not trade him now but if he has a good year this year his value will be somewhat higher.
