I have no idea what Dubas is going to do. I don’t even fulling understand that start of season cap rules. I’m just sitting outside wasting time. I think they need at least 7 D and an extra forward plus JT on the roster given how many games they play at the start of the season. If there’s a way to do that without losing anyone valuable, great. I haven’t seen it. If they have to move someone, I’d pick Engvall because there are guys like him available cheaper.

The D I wonder about but with Robertson on the marlies if they have a forward get hurt they can call him up and send him back down without worrying about waivers.

Do I think he deserves to be on the leafs? Yes. Do I think he will be til next year? No.

So if the leafs trade Holl will you eat your hat?

Holl is not their shutdown D. He is their 5th or 6th D on most nights.

He didnt even get their toughest assignments last season.

Look at his QOC..51%. He was not their shutdown D last season.

Holl is a nice supporting player, the same type of player you are saying don't matter when it counts.

- Santo_44

He's 30 years old, and gets paid $2M a year. That's basically mimimum wage for a D of his age.

Why are you thinking he should be anything more than a #5 or #6?

That's his job.

I don't care how he got there.

He was below Reilly, Muzzin, Brodie and Gio for the level of comp he faced. He is not their shutdown D.

That’s because they had Lyubushkin, another rightie, and not one of those 4

I'd take whoever gives you the best return.

You might have to trade both anyways if everyone gets healthy.

I don't get the hate Holl gets around here.

Everytime we play the Leafs, I think he's annoying to play against. Nothing flashy but he breaks plenty of plays and makes our forward go to the outside.

He's a bottom pairing defenseman, sure. But he's not a bad one in my book.

- Scabeh

If he’s with someone good and he doesn’t have to or doesn’t try to do too much, he’s reasonably passable. He can get back, take a hit and get the puck to his partner who knows what to do with it. He’s ok with his stick and generally does a decent(ish) job on the pk.

He can be a mess in the open ice or if he has to do too much. He was alright with good Muzzin and awful with bad Muzzin.

His mistakes are very visible. His decent play is far less so.

Don't agree once again.

Holl is a good number 5 d, one that you can trade and won't move the needle either way.

Of course you want him on your team, but if there is a cap crunch he can be traded and we probably barely notice.

He helps the PK the most.

So Marner?

The return is space. You know, Pridham’s final frontier

Just imagine what this team could do with an extra $18M in cap space.

Hell, we could probably be as good as the Lightning.

I don't know who is more important now, Marner or Holl.

Holl's mom did the electric slide on the jumbotron during Parents' Weekend.

Trade Holl.

So who’s going to be the right side on the shutdown pairing?

Keefe won’t let Rielly move the right, Gio said he was willing but hasn’t even been tried there. Sandin in a shutdown role would be a laugh (I like the kid but defensively he’s weak), and it’s already very clear Brodie is going to be paired with Rielly on the top pairing.

So who will it be? A team that considers itself a cup contender will not use young guys who are essentially rookies in that role so no for Sandin and Liljegren, the top pairing is Rielly and Brodie so not them, Muzzin is their most defensive left sided guy so he’ll be there and Keefe won’t even try Gio out on the right side.

Leaves one guy for the right side in the primary shutdown role. Holl.

He proves he can handle top pairing minutes decently. I’m not surprised one bit.

Once upon a time my brother was at a corporate event with Kevin Lowe.

This was when Dion Phaneuf was the Leafs' captain.

My brother started asking snide, rhetorical questions to Lowe about Phaneuf's value.

Lowe basically told him (politely) to shut the frank up, he had no idea what he was talking about, Phaneuf is considered a top D in the NHL.

What makes it so much more funny is Lowe shutting down my brother.

Yes, this is the same brother who I started making him fill out predictions before every Leafs ticket draft, or I wouldn't give him tickets. He's a typical Leafs fan - only happy to tell you that he told you so when things go badly.

Marner. You are thinking with small IQ small PP ideas. Dubas has big brain moves.
