They have to trade one.
Unless they want to make JT miss another 6-7 more games than he has to...which for a star veteran would not be a good idea. It's already unfortunate he starts his season late as it is.
I did the math earlier. They can not go past Monday without one of those players gone or playing a man short opening night. - Santo_44
No they don’t.
Drop Clifford and Simmonds with Liljegren on the LTIR and they’ll have a month to get the space Liljegren would need when he’s ready to return.
Clifford: $762,500.00
Simmonds: $900,000.00
Liljegren: $1,400,000.00
Total: $3,062,500.00
Leaves them with $169,384.00 of cap space.
Leaves them with a full lineup once JT is back. Means no Zach or Robertson tho. I could see them running a 4th line with only 2 players while they waited for JT as well.

They could replace Engvall tomorrow with any other guy, and you wouldn't even remember he was here.
He's not a bad player.
He's franking vanilla. - Atomic Wedgie
Ya, subject to anyone else going on LTIR, Engvall (or Holl) hitting waivers or being dealt buys them space and lets them carry spares.
To be honest I think he's got some upside to bang in 15 and play a good 2-way game. I'd prefer Holl be sacrificed b/c I'd prefer to see Sandin and Lilly getting minutes. |

Here's my post from 10am (IE. fully caffeinated)
The current cap crunch ...
If it's only Lilly on LTIR to start the year then their cap extends to 83.9.
Current goalies = 6.487M
Current 7 D = 23.725M
Forwards (11) = 52.555M
That totals 82.98M leaving them $920k to sign or slot in the 12th forward. Not sure if ZAR would sign for that? Then, when Lilly's back they need to drop back down to 82.5 by cutting a d'man making 1.4M or more (or maybe new LTIR becomes available by then).
Putting Engvall or JT on LTIR would alleviate a lot of cap strain.
Or, if possible, moving Holl or Kerfoot. - The Law
May I ask where you’re getting these numbers? Capfriendly seems a tad different.

Sorry but your math is off.
Literally did arm chair gm this morning on cap friendly. |

No my math isn’t off.
They’re over the cap $2,893,116.00
So getting those three off the cap hit does the trick but they’ll begin the season with 11 forwards til JT is ready to go. |

Brodie plays the RS better than most righties
Mete can play the right side
Lil is back in November
Gio can play the right side fine
I think you are over valuing this need for a right side d man. Unfortunately the flat cap has (frank)ed the leafs a bit. The luxury of having the perfect number of LHD/RHD isnt there. |

It's the same numbers as Capfriendly. There's lists 14F, 7D and 2G. The Goalies and D stay the same in the hypo. At forward Remove Simmonds, Clifford, Gaudette and Anderson. That leaves 10 locks. I assume the 11F is Malgin and his 750k (could end up being Gaudette or Robertson).
Those AAV's (11F, 7D, and 2G), combined with the Leafs 212k in bonus overage total 82.98M. With Lilly on LTIR the Leafs can go to 83.9. Meaning they can carry this group and add a 12th forward for $920k or less. ZAR? |

I prefer Engvall to Holl and want to see the kids get max minutes as well. I think it comes down to how Dubas and Keefe see the drop off from Holl to Mete compared to from Engvall to all the spare forwards they have. As it is, they’re going to lose some decent forwards. Moving Holl, as satisfying as that is, leaves them thin (after Mete, l’abyss). Moving Engvall means slotting in another decent forward.

I have it plugged into arm chair gm right now. We will even do it your way where Robertson gets sent down and a league min guy is played. We'll do the cheapest ZAR would sign for...and if you dont think he will be signed and leafs will use a league min guy they are still over the cap.

I don't know what you are doing, maybe the numbers dont show Lil's 400K bonus that is applied to the cap from last year amongst other things.
But this is cap friendly calculations. |

Ok there’s our difference… I’m simply basing it off of what they currently have as NHL contracts. (So included Gaudette and Anderson)
It will be interesting if they cut those two to get Malgin and Zar on the team, I’d prefer it tbh. |

Maybe, which is what brought me to the "it has to be one/more of Engvall, Holl, or Kerfoot" result. OR, somebody else hits LTIR. |

Yeah unless someone gets injured bad enough this weekend.
But if not, one of those guys have to go by Monday.

Makes sense. Could also come down to who is more moveable and perhaps what's being offered. |

My difference is that they don’t sign anyone.
So it would be
Bunting Matthews Marner
Gaudette Kerfoot Nylander
Engvall Kampf NAK
Jarnkrok Anderson
JT
Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Gio Sandin
Hence my question of if they’re willing to start the season with 11 forwards

The only one I see is Engvall since both Holl and Kerfoot would need to be replaced with someone who is pretty much exactly like them…. And good luck finding that cheaper. |

They definitely sign ZAR. If the numbers require, Simmonds, Cliff, Anderson and Gaudette go on waivers easy. I think Malgin is ahead of them as well |

good point on Tavares, looks like he settled in at around 65 point player.
9mil for that seem steep'ish - senstroll
for any team coached by Trotz, that's good output. Not amazing, but good. Hockey pool guys, this guy is a good gamble to see a nice rise in points this year.

They have been playing ZAR and NAK together all pre season. They likely are going to sign him.
Starting the season a man short, not being able to play Robertson when he has earned it, not being able to sign ZAR when there is a clear fit and won't cost a lot is not worth it.
