Defensive structure is well and good but whether you lose 2-1 or 5-2, you still lost. No Couts, no Ellis, probably no Farabee (at least at the start); who is going to score for this team? You aren’t going to go very far if you can only generate sustained pressure with a 5 on 3 advantage.

I’ll be truly surprised if this team breaks 72 points and scores more than 200 goals. Hell, if they hit 80 points with this roster, Torts deserves to be coach of the year.

- BiggE

Honestly it would be a disaster if this team hit 80 points and lost out of getting top end and even generational talent in this draft. The Flyers have had 25 wins the past two seasons, I can only hope they stay at 25 wins or less this season. Overachieving this year does nothing to help this team or franchise.

Winning the Deslauriers sweepstakes is already paying dividends. When he is out there it is noticeable. No liberties are taken against the Flyers players and there is a whole heck of a lot more open ice for the dynamic offensive players on this team to demonstrate their abilities.

I can't wait until he drops some bodies this season!!!

So why does Tort's insist on so much conditioning if he knows it blocks the staff's ability to evaluate players? Its OK to emphasize conditioning, but can't that be done throughout the early part of the season vs. the first week of camp?

Still 11 days until the start of the regular season. They'll be focusing on systems and execution after the preseason finale tomorrow. Tortorella believes that camp/preseason time is better spent on conditioning and getting a handle on where your new players -- they'll all new for him minus Atkinson -- are mentally than in trying to win games. The wave of injuries has also delayed the process.

Starting early for the excuses lol. Also will they say they don't have enough practice time to implement the systems once the season starts?

Nothing wrong at all getting these guys into shape. That is the one thing you can control and may actually help. This team will not be a puck possession team so they will be chasing a lot. They better be in shape.

Yeah, he’s a one man demolition force. All that extra space but no one to make plays or put the puck in the net. Teams don’t need to take liberties against players that aren’t a threat. Winning the sweepstakes that no one wanted to win isn’t winning. But that was your point.

They pretty much know what the roster is going to be except for maybe 2-3 spots. Conditioning will be a factor into his decision making. Torts doesn't care about preseason wins or loses, he's looking for compete level. They have more than a week to coach them on systems work. I don't have a problem with the way Torts is running camp. The problem is the roster construction and the ongoing saga of injuries.

I agree its not about wins and losses, but its also hard to compete when you are very tired from all the conditioning skates is my point.

This team is going to absolutely SUCK this year.
- Nh_kong

The thing that has bothered me most about this team the past few seasons is their horrible lack of foot speed. Against Boston the other day, who BTW is at best an average skating team, the Flyers looked really, really slow. They got beat to almost every puck and I think the big reason the Flyers cannot generate offense is they have no one in the lineup that can actually beat a defender 1 on 1. The Flyers have got to put an emphasis of getting players with foot speed IMO.

What does it matter if they were tired from practice and lost a pre season game, or all of them for that matter? You contradict yourself in your darn post. Just be quiet please.

what's the point of repeating this daily though? The team is what it is. You just point and laugh
- black_francis

Because Chuck Fletcher, Dave Scott and the Country Club are still making the decisions.

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. We are setting up to have a terrible year at a perfect time. A few studs in the draft and getting one is exactly what this team and city needs!

The Flyers management is so incompetent that they can screw up a dumpster fire.

In this case that means to improve the team from extremely bad ( bottom 2 team) to merely very bad (bottom 6-7 team) leaving them capped out (which is already a given), low on draft picks (no 2nd in this draft - Risto, the gift that keeps on giving), unable take on expiring contracts to acquire picks due to being LTIR capped and with little to look forward to in the future except more Ellis and Couts IR updates from Fletch.

If the Flyers didn't sign nd and send Attard down - they would be 200K and change under the cap

Not just capped out, also at 49/50 contracts.

There's gonna be some decent young players who will end up on waivers before the season starts, and the Flyers aren't in a position to pick any of them up. Lest they hit 50/50 and completely handcuff themselves.

A) Behind a paywall
B) I don't really care who they are, I would trade ND and his contract to give any one of them a PTO because you literally can't be worse than the statistical worst player in the league ... and the flyers won the right to pay him for 4 years ... yeaaaaaaaa..... :sob:
