Like lots of the kids tonight.

But if I had to pick one guy out of the first half of the game it would be JBD.

He does not stand out in a flashy way. But seems to project a rock steady presence.

JBD gets pushed off the puck far too easy in my eyes....he hasn't won a battle in the corner all night for the puck. Yes, he skates well, patient and solid first pass....but he lacks the angles down low and doesn't box out, while lacking physical play. I saw him 3 times last year in Belleville and he needs another year down there in my eyes. And as I type this.....JBD manhandled in front of the net, puck ends up in the net.

It's ok to look solid in this kind of game but it will be interesting to see what they can do with legit NHL talent. Ehlers and Connor are basically just going through the motions and still being effective. However, lots of things to overthink and overvalue in preseason. Warm up games after all.

True! But Pinto....boom....that line has looked very good!

While I still wouldn't call him untouchable in the trade market (for the right deal), Pinto really looks like an NHL player player amongst AHLers tonight. This is a good thing. Nicer hands then I was expecting.

Exactly, lets see where his game is at 10 or 20 games into the season.

Like Simmer pointed out....the D that have played with Mann in Belleville are far more structured.....JBD/Thomson/Heatherington/Guenette.....interesting....

I was out of the room and missed Pinto's goal. So, I pulled it up and watched it several times. He is very cool. Like, he wants and expects to score.

Perhaps you can't call him untouchable. But, it would be unacceptable to include him as part of a package for a top 4 Dman.

It will interesting to see his development. As Kevin said, need 10-20 actual NHL games to gauge what you have. Good performance today. Hopefully he can continue to build.

On that Jets 5th goal, Brannstrom....lazy pass up the half wall to nobody....puck ends up in the net. PD...you gotta cut your loses with this guy!

It can be heavily biased when you get the local home broadcast as we do tonight. But, overall, the Winnipeg crew has been pretty good and very balanced in their reporting. Nothing like a Leaf/Sens broadcast when it sometimes sounds like only one team dressed for the game.

JBD for the entire 3rd period, he gets beat on easy chips into the defensive zone, his angles are average and stick placement allows the opposition to gain possession quite easily....I don't see what many Sens fans are saying?! Lassi Thomson is head and shoulders ahead of him. Lassi's transition game is light years ahead of JBD, he clears the defensive zone far quicker and more efficiently.....

True but these 2 are so monotone, like they're announcing in a library! They never get excited about anything.

Kastelic was solid but Kelly was a no show tonight!

Thomson then Heatherington for me were the best Dmen tonight. Guenette and JBD, even....Brannstrom was just awful.....

Yes there was some dry moments especially in the second when the Sens bottled up the Jets in their own end. And they did not show us too much broadcast emotion when the Sens scored. But they did punch it up a bit for most of the Jets play. I guess when you are trying to be balanced you run the risk of sounding bland. Still prefer it over the Leaf/Sens broadcast where the announcers often sound like they are calling a game where only one team showed up for the match.

Despite Brannstroms play they still gave him prime ice time. Is he being show cased?

The problem with that, is if you're truly showcasing Brannstrom, he's lowering his value because he's struggling in a pre-season while getting top 4 minutes....I truly think they gotta cut their losses.....like now....he had a big hit once....but honestly, outside of that, he just consistently makes bad mistakes that end up in the net!

Switch the goaltenders and Ottawa wins this game. They looked strong at times but when Winnipeg had their top guys out there play turned around pretty quickly.

Overall they did better than I expected with no real surprises. Pinto was the best and Mandolese the worst. I prefer JBD over Thomson because he seems dependable to me while Thomson leaks defensively. Obviously some of you see it differently but it doesn't matter because Smith won't play these guys this year.

Boucher pissed me off with that stupid offensive zone penalty which turned the momentum in Winnipeg's favour after they scored. They seemed to score any good chance they got. Only late in the third did Mandolese make a couple of saves but way too little too late.

100% with you on Boucher, I mentioned it Twitter and in here too. Mandolese was down too fast or too deep in his net tonight. I guess we will agree to disagree on JBD/Lassi. Lassi looked far more NHL ready when he was up here last year compared to JBD, tonight, Lassi was their best Dman.

Saw another report, league is providing guidance to teams on the cap jumping to $92m the year after next and possibly sooner. Further speculation that once settled the cap will continue to grow by $4m per year to $112m by the end of the agreement between the players and league.

By the end of their contracts, the current deals with Chabot, Tkachuk, Norris and Steutzel will each be in the range of 7% of the cap. Sweet!

Yes. Re: The cap.
It looks like PD has locked most of this core up cheaply. Provided they play to their capabilities we are in good shape. We also have room to sign the Cat---if he plays like he deserves it.

I'm on the Lassi Thompson train too. You can make him into something. He hits big too. The Jets didn't really get much time or space in this game until the power play started rocking. All in all a solid game by a C-Crew.

Zaitsev still has to go. And he wont, so....figure out who they're cutting---again.

After 30-40 more games in Bville Guenette will be ahead of JBD and he'll push for a spot on the Sens next year plus he's only 21 years old.

then, as I've been saying all along add JBD to the package to get Chycrun and be done with it.

JBD
Brannstrom
Sokolov
Zaitsev
2023 2nd round
2024 1st round unprotected
and a skate sharpening machine to Arizona for the Chyc.

I would be fine with that deal.

Pinto looks like a boss out there. If he is healthy, he should do a great job in the 3C role.
Brannstrom looked good on the PP but struggles with playing defence. I don't see a future here in Ottawa.
Shawn Simpson keeps calling for JBD to play with Chabot to start the season. I don't see why.
Thomson and Guennette seem to be the top D prospects (after Sanderson) with the potential to play bottom pairing minutes.

JBD is steady and dependable defensively. Chabot would always know his back is covered and just like with Zub that would free up his offensive game.

That would allow Zub to play alongside Sanderson which is a far better option than Hamonic.

I also like Thomson but he's more of an offensive D and not that great defensively so not really a good partner for Chabot but I would take either of those guys before seeing Zaitsev playing alongside Chabot again. Chabot has also said he likes playing with Thomson so there's that.

I would do it but the problem is Sokolov is no longer a top prospect in any way. Sure he has helped his skating, straight ahead speed but his down low area where he's going to make his bread and butter, scoring goals in the front of the net, his first 3-5 strides are quite frankly awful and I had a few scouts say to me, when you struggle in that area and you don't bring anything else to the table, I don't see him making it as a regular in the NHL. If AZ is fine with Sokolov I ain't going to complain but it wouldn't surprise me if they were to ask for a guy like Jarventie who has far more upside.

I truly think Guenette is more of a project this year, in terms that he needs at least another full season in the AHL, possibly longer.....but he could easily project out ahead of JBD in a year or two.
