School boards get money based on enrollment, and it's a fight in english boards. So how do you sell your schools? Graduation rates! It's more important to keep kids in school rather than letting the process work.
My board brags about the near 90% graduation rate. No way are 9/10 kids able to actually graduate. - mr.peanut
I kinda guessed at the fact it was either greed or political. So in this case greed. Dumbing down kids for profit. FFS! |

Agreed, but they were saying we were physically lazy. We had most of them academically surpassed by grade 8 because many in that generation did not finish school as they needed to work to help provide for their families. - The Judge
I don't know for sure but I'd tend to say it'll balance itself out, we have kids addicted to technology and doing dumb things but there are also more educated young folks out there than there were 50 or 100 years ago. bottom line is idiots have existed anyway since the dawn of time, and will continue to exist. |

Oh for sure, there are still lots of sharp kids out there, but as Peanut called it"diploma factories" does not bode well for the future. Specially when you consider that as a baby boomer retires, we only have 0.8 people to replace them, and that number is actually projected to go lower. Are we going to have enough of these smart kids if we keep dishing out participation diplomas to replace them? And I have an idea that will hit us very hard when my generations starts retiring in 10-15 years. |

yeah, I think it would be a huge exaggeration though to say that every single university and academia has let down their standards to give out diplomas to anyone. you still have to work your ass off if you're studying in technology or the medical field for example. |

lol, of course I don't think we will have a moron that can barely read or write as doctors, or in the IT fields, because you cannot become one unless you actually can. But we are already experiencing a fairly serious shortage of qualified people in the skilled trades, and it's getting worse fairly quickly. Something has to be done to bring back quality education in all schools. While I do imagine there are still schools and Universities dedicated to quality education, I just have this sense that the percentage is really not that high. Imagine nuclear power plants being run with only 50% of the optimally required work force. Kind off scary to think about, IMHO. |

I haven't really looked up the official numbers but I can't say I see it as bad as you're portraying it to be... these tend to fluctuate, so I don't think we'll be stuck with only half the people to run a power plant any time soon.
