That’s something that is very possibly true… my question would simply be “why two years!” tho

Maybe…..

They need someone to keep Spezza company in a couple years and Gio hasn’t played enough games with the leafs to become office worthy yet lol

I don't think you get him unless it's two years, but it's only 800k each. No big deal.

Also, maybe it's Dubas believing Sandin is two years away or posturing for a trade lol. I could see Dubas getting a good deal for him. He doesn't get fleeced in trades often.

Hence why he’s holding on.

I imagine he wished he could have Sandin signed and going to camp but I could see him waiting for a team to lose an offensive left side d man making them willing to overpay for Sandin.

As for Gio that’s still a tad iffy to me… the guy is from Toronto. It’s not like he’s being asked to live away from home. I sincerely believe they see him as their primary bottom pair/2nd PP guy for a couple years… more so than Sandin at least.

Calgary wanted him back was the other rumour and he didn't really leave on bad terms. I believe he still owns a home there, so locking him in for 2 years might have been what it took to keep him home.

He also said in an interview he sold his Toronto home a few years back so maybe he needed the extra year to pay for the new one

Even 1.6 million wouldn’t cover that lol

I’m in London still… house prices have jacked up here like crazy… a lot of it from Toronto folk moving here.

Seeing a property split three houses down currently. Houses on this street are extremely old. The neighbourhood was questionable for years. Hell, there’s an old farmhouse still standing built in 1849! It’s not looking good tho lol

Tbh tho… a friend of mine about a block down bought his place in 2013 for $150K… he’s not selling but he got it currently looked at now just to find out. Starting at $600K if he put it up for sale.

As for Calgary don’t be surprised if he isn’t in the lineup when the leafs play them… he’s been around long enough to hear about Sutter lol

So essentially boot Sandin out of the lineup because Gio is coming in cheap?
- Dozzer

He is not booted out of the lineup.

He will sign and will play eventually.

A cap team with a flat cap does not turn down 800K for Gio.

There will also be injuries.

I’m genuinely curious now when it comes to how much Spezza is getting paid

To start I truly don’t mind Holl because let’s be honest… for 2 mill a team isn’t going to get a guy who’s much better. I do get the idea of opening up cap space to get someone better tho.

I don’t mind the Kerfoot idea kind of? Lol.

Here’s why tho. JT has spent his focus this off-season on his skating. People blew me away last year because after spending a summer where he couldn’t practice he still damn near put up a PPG for crying out loud. Yes his speed is a bit of an issue but I think he’ll surprise us this year tbh… which means him and Nylander could be a wrecking crew offensively this year which makes Kerfoot (or at least a guy with the same skill set) a big priority for that line. I’m not against moving Kerfoot but I’d want him replaced by a defence first forward if JT and Nylander can dominate.

Ya, I don't really disagree with any of that Doz.

I get that Holl is cheap but an upgrade in that #4 spot would be awesome for the team. Alas, no cap really so I-don't-totally-suck-Holl will have to do.

Hope JT finds some wheels and lights it up, same as I hope Nylander finds more balls this year. (Marner's dropped last season so no hate for him any more)

I just always worry because the team is so cash strapped that they will get close but not quite make it and start losing the core by not sacrificing one of them for more balance and upgrades. As the great Maxwell Smart used to say: "missed it by that much".

(Glad ur doing alright and sorry to hear you've got to go back for some work. Sending good vibes bud!)

Do I wish we had a better #4 D? Yup

Do I think Holl is terrible? Nah… he’s your typical 2 million dollar guy so let’s be fair lol

As for the core I hate saying this but it’s either wait it out or sell Matthews for a fortune. JT will die before leaving Toronto, same with Marner, Nylander is turning out to be actually rather cheap and is a good winger for a star who works the boards like JT does… and the truth is half of Matthews’ family is Mexican so, Altho it sucks, if the leafs aren’t true competitors in the next couple of years I just don’t see Matthews wanting to stick around. Sure being hugely popular is good to a young kid but a guy in his late 20s might be looking for a little bit more privacy (he’ll be 28 when he starts the first season of his next contract).

So here’s hoping this core finally (frank)ing pulls it off. Remember last year’s game 7 they lost 2-1 and only Rielly scored for the leafs… I don’t give a crap that two of them got an assist… those 4 are paid to win those damn games… not Holl, not Kerfoot, not the goalie only letting in 2…..THEM.

Also thank you… like I said I’m hoping food is allowed to get brought to me by then lol

Lol. Sharks just got a $5M penalty applied to LAST YEAR’S cap for illegally terminating Kane’s contract.

How to say we think Kane is a POS without saying Kane is a POS.

Edit

Slight clarification- they have to pay him and take the cap hit from last year’s cap (not sure if it’s $5M)

I have no idea on how that matters in this or why it's not for this year?

I’m not sure either. I guess it was because they terminated his contract last year but the league still could have messed up the team by punishing them and applying the hit this year.

Or you could say he hasn't been a point per game player in the last 3 seasons, (he's been nearly 5 points shy every of those seasons) and was a -17 2 years ago and a -15 last year.

There has been alot of chatter that his leadership is an issue.

I don't think many teams will jump to grab a 36 year old Blake Wheeler at 8M per but I could very well be surprised - if Holland had the scratch he probably would. lol

- Cush29

if he was still more than point per game he'd be worth more than 8m though. 85 to 90 point players are paid more like $10M

I'd take JT today at his contract over Wheeler today at his but that's just me.

- Cush29

I do'nt think that's JUST you, but I suspect many would think different. pretty close I'd say.
