I think it's best that most folks stay away from Virtanen but, uh, probably especially the Oilers considering Bob Nicholson's relationship with Hockey Canada. |

Virtanen might very well be completely innocent of any wrongdoing, however the potential problems simply wouldn't be worth it for any player that is maybe a solid 4th liner at best. |

There's a fine line to walk between treating someone like Virtanen as if they're "innocent" and treating them as if they're "found not guilty"- which should be understood as distinct from "innocent"- while also not treating them as if they're "guilty". In my experience, people don't walk this line deftly. |

For clarity, I wouldn't be opposed to EDM offering him a PTO. I can see why others would disagree (public-facing organization, different moral thresholds, etc) but I view not doing so purely on the basis of the criminal case as leaning in the direction of treating him as if he's guilty. I presume that's the view of this Rev fellow, as well.
However, there's also a solid hockey argument to not extending an offer as he isn't a good player. jfkst1 summarised it well. |

The oilers management are morons. So who knows what they’ll do. If it was me I’d avoid it on both counts. Avoid the distraction of signing a probable rapist and the fact that he stinks. |

"It is an issue I would like to see the Oilers on the correct side of and I hope it is not a conversation that we need to keep having."
I don't see how not stigmatizing a person found not to be guilty is 'staying on the correct side' of things. I'd be more worried about the way his play deteriorated in Vancouver than I would be that I was hiring a degenerate. Crucifying people for being accused is not what our system or our society is about.

There are also 8 ex-world junior players that the Oilers can grab at a deep discount pretty soon... |

Him being found guilty or not guilty has nothing to do with his playing NHL hockey, it just determines if he goes to jail or not. He had a fair trial and the results are the results, that's far from being crucified.
Him not getting any contract offers is just one of the downsides of choosing to work in the entertainment business, public perception matters. One mistake that turns enough of the public against you can mess it all up. That being said, if he was a really good player I'm sure he'd be able to find his way back on a team at some point.

Agreed on Virtanen. Stay away. But Kenny and the oilers have not seemed to care about these things the past few years. - TurdFergeson
Now don’t quote me on this, but IIRC, the evidence produced in court weighed heavily in Virtanen’s favour? If so, is this not more of a case of “he’s likely innocent”, rather than “we couldn’t find enough to convict”?
Regardless, it’s a hard pass for me. Virtanen isn’t better than anyone else currently on the roster (IMO). |

Patty Kane still plays. There’s always been a ton of allegations and quite a bit of evidence that he’s gotten away with a lot. But he’s a star player. |

The biggest issue with these cases is time usually passes between the incident and the victim coming forward. If they don’t immediately go to the hospital and police then it’s difficult to have solid evidence of the crime. |

Sorry wasn’t talking about you. There is a poster called Rev that is an oiler fan. He was defending Virtanen on the last thread. |

I didn't think you meant me... I just wanted to chime in. My disdain for Virtanen coupled with the fact that he is a terrible hockey player I felt like I needed to drop my two cents. Innocent or not he is a douche bag and the Oilers already have one and don't need another.

I’d say her character and some of her recall was in question but at the very least it showed he’s a pos. |
