Certainly in a perfect world, he stands to make more money than he signed for just now in the long run. But let's be fair - he signed for $8.3m. He likely won't reach that level of play for a couple of years, but when he does Ottawa stands to benefit in the long run. From a lot of 8 year deals that buy potential, you lose in the first 3 years, seem to peak around year 4 and then gain in the final 4. If the player remains healthy and grows as expected, it's a benefit. If the player suffers any career threatening issue, they are guaranteed to make a lot money. Let's not forget that Stutzle is going to be 29 when it expires - so he'll still be young enough to cash in as a UFA.
Let's say he signed a 3 year bridge after this season. That's probably 3x$6.5, and then he'd be signing a longer term deal that's buying more UFA years with a higher cap - the cap in 3 years is maybe @ $89m once the escrow and recovery issues are dealt with. If he were signed at the 10.1% cap hit he received now, that would project out to less than he's making now on an 8 year term. If were signed at say a 10.5% (Laine, O'Rielly, Tarasenko) he'd make close to the same over those 8 years, and if he were to exceed expectations and sign at 11% (Draisaitl, Kaprizov), he'd be out about $2m.
So really, it's not what he left on the table, inasmuch as it's the timing of when he signed. The cap hasn't recovered and until it does - which would still be at least 3-4 years away - a lot of contracts will be slightly lower than projections. - Monkeypunk
I thought Daly said they're ahead of schedule and suggested that we might see a big(ger) bump in 24-25? Just in time for Matty to be able to say I'd like about 16% of 90 or so ... |

Factor in the cost of Montreal'ers smoking a pack a day and it balances out. |

If you're gonna make up stereotypes about people in Montreal, at least make them funny or believable.
Otherwise it's just insulting.
Now let me enjoy my Pepsi and May West in peace.

Not disagreeing at all but .....if in 3-4 yrs the Cap is 90M his 10% would be 9M instead of 8.35. After tax dollars vs. the comfort of locking in a year early makes it a fair decision.
I think the bigger risk to him is if he went out and kicked ass this year (ala Marner) he might have been able to argue he's a 12 or 13% guy. That might make him 10+ per. - The Law
He’ll have a year at least with DeBrincat and Giroux so you’d expect him to put up some decent numbers. I’m mostly surprised because it seems like a nervous move instead of something that a guy who’s really sure of himself and is betting on himself would do.
Who knows. Maybe he’s thinking that’s as much money as I’ll ever need and I’ll just lock it in now. I definitely think he’s leaving career money in the table though. |

Admittedly I had to look up May West. That's a way better name then Jos Louis! |

I think they know they're leaving it on the table. Just different priorities.
McDavid did the same.
Wonder what Marner and Nylander would have truly accepted a summer earlier. Or whether they were always hell bent on waiting for maximum leverage. |

True ...but aging populations and smoking are bigger cost components and we all know Quebecers smoke a lot and are all over the age of 60.
Scabeh has young kid(s) but he's 78. That's just how they roll. |

I mean. Come on. Give the guy a break. He already has to cheer for the Habs.

I agree that they knew and maybe it’s just because it doesn’t fit with my preconceived ideas of best in the world athletes. I’d expect someone who has pushed themselves to be one of the very best and who has been the very best at every level to want the monetary recognition that comes with it.
I’m very intrigued to see how Marner, Nylander and especially Matthews play their next contracts in the context of the cap bump. I think (and I’m pretty much alone in this) that Matthews might do a 3 year bridge to allow him to lock in at a much higher level. |

Nobody has to cheer for the Habs. I used to cheer for the Habs. I quit.

It's a good gamble imo.
I mean, there's still the risk he doesn't live up to his potential after only one good season but.... odds are in their favor I'd say.
How much money will be left for the defense and goaltending though. - Scabeh
yeah, I mean, this is the sort of player you want on your 8 year contact. it's a smart gamble, but a gamble nonetheless.

90m is only 8m more than now. That really won't have the impact on salaries you seem to think it will. |

Highly unlikely, as far as I've seen of him. - GreatGigInTheSky
yeah, he's a good player, but I do'nt really see an elite, 100+ point player either.
That said, 100+ point players make a lot in today's NHL. more than 10mil. |
