I hated the Murray trade, but with 2 months to process it I’m beginning to have an optimistic outlook on it.

imo the Leafs should have gotten more to take him. and/or made Ott retain more cap.

other than that, ill wait and see how it turns out

I am predicting the Leafs will finish with a record 160pts this season, a 79-1-2 record, of course the Habs will be the team beating the Leafs 3 times.

I think if the Sens were to retain more of his cap hit, a player or a pick would of needed to go the other way.

I'm in the let see him play camp before I decide if Murray is a waste of cap space.

It's a rehash of a conversation we've all had before. According to Dorion, if he retained more than 25%, he could have just bought him out. If he'd done that, it would have been $1.75m, .75m, $2.5m, $2.5m. Instead, by retaining salary, it's $1.56 and $1.56.

If Dorion's only immediate concern was year 1, then the statement is true. Frankly, given that Murray was interested in rekindling with is old coach and goalie coach, I'd have called the bluff and let Dorion buy him out - then we'd have him at around $1.5m, which is more fair.

Dorion claimed he had another team interested - I'd have called that bluff, too. Murray was far from the only viable target - especially at $4.7m.

That all laid out - what's done is done, and we'll go from here. I like plenty of things Dubas has done. This is one of a few that, regardless of how it turns out, I think he mishandled.

So Dubas could have gotten him to retain more as he had leverage...Im sure Dorion didnt want or probably couldnt be allowed to have 2.5m of dead money/cap on the books 3/4 years from now.
Ah well, it only 2 years

If I were negotiating I would have made them send retain more salary and include all their good players. But that’s just me.

If Dubas was smart, he would have traded Matthews to Ottawa for a seventh round pick, and then had Ottawa send Matthews back with 50 percent retained as part of the Murray trade.

Dubas is in over his head.

If you think about the retention, this is your quick and dirty map:

25% Retained; Cost to Toronto: $4.69m; Cost to Ottawa: $1.56m
30% Retained; Cost to Toronto: $4.38m; Cost to Ottawa: $1.88m
35% Retained; Cost to Toronto: $4.06m; Cost to Ottawa: $2.19m
40% Retained; Cost to Toronto: $3.75m; Cost to Ottawa: $2.5m
45% Retained; Cost to Toronto: $3.44m; Cost to Ottawa: $2.81m
50% Retained; Cost to Toronto: $3.13m; Cost to Ottawa: $3.13m

If Dorion was, as he said, willing to buy out Murray, then his largest disincentive was the immediate cap cost of $1.75m and not exceeding it. Obviously from the balancing act he was doing - knowing that he was going to sign Giroux, but also having to considering resigning DeBrincat, Stutzle, Formenton and Pinto - this year or next, I think he had more to consider than just the immediate cost. Especially since Ottawa is in fine cap shape this year. Next year will be a beast for them if they manage to resign DeBrincat and Stutzle - and the buyout would actually have been less painful next year @ $750k than the retention salary.

You're right - those last two years would rely heavily on cap increases to cover that $2.5m loss in dead cap.

At the end of the day - and this is how I feel about Murray (and I think a lot of us), there was sincerely no amount of retention on the table that makes his salary justifiable for the player he has been for the past 3-4 seasons.

The player he is capable of being is worth plenty - but putting all your chips on double 0 in roulette is a nutty way to try and make a mortgage payment.
