Burns improves the Hurricanes D. Upgrade over Tony D. San Jose retained money as well.

I feel the same way. Burns cap hit for Carolina is 5.28M

Stastny will be turning 37 this season and before last season hasn't had a 20+ goals since 2013. He is also injury prone and has only 3 season where he played 75 plus games. Why would I want an old guy possibly taking a spot of a young guy?

He had 21 goals last season

I’m sure Burns improves offense generated from the back end but I’m not a fan of Burns overall as a defenseman. To make this sort of deal, the Canes better be ready to win, which I am a believer of Brind’Amour as a coach, along with their core players.

I think if the Canes had Anderson in the playoffs they may have beaten the Rangers.

And why would he sign here regardless of money? Play for a team with a chance to go far in the playoffs, or play for a bottom feeder team with no chance to be anywhere near the playoffs for the immediate future?

No brainer decision.

The problem with the Canes is they don't have enough top end scoring talent. Aho, Svechnikov and Trochek were not enough and could be shut down when the games got tight. I didn't think goal tending was a big issue for them because overall Carolina is a good defensive team. We'll see if replacing Trochek with Paciorety is enough, I don't think it will be.

The Canes were a top 10 scoring team in the regular season. Just outside the top 10 in the playoffs. As young players grow and develop, they will get even better offensively.
- MJL

The Canes power play was a mess in the playoffs and that ultimately is what did them in. I don't see it getting that much better this season.

I like Tony D. That was a good move to get 3 picks then acquire Burns.

I agree with you but I think Anderson was a beast all season and I think he may have came up with that "save" that sparks the team. Raanta was fantastic but Anderson would have been better.

So you see zero room for improvement from any of their young players?

I would say Tony D is better at this point. But I wouldn’t argue with anyone going with Burns. I watch the Sharks more than any other team after the Wild. Mario Ferraro is a very underrated dman and was really good at covering Burns’ blunders.

DeAngelo is horrendous defensively. Burns is bad also but not quite to DeAngelo's level.

I don’t agree. But I think Burns could fare better than Tony this year. Slavin > Ferraro and Canes forwards are much better than the Sharks. The Flyers don’t have anyone to mask DeAngelo’s deficiencies.

I also do not think Tony D is as bad as being made out to be on the defensive end.
